I think I would have done more to this motor before starting it than just fresh gas. I know he cleaned the points but still. Belts? Water pump? Oil pump?Radiator? I wonder if he damaged it. GS valve covers and is that a '66 Q-jet intake on it. I know I'm judging a book by it's cover but I am surprised it started. Ebay auction Rick
If I was trapped in a post apocolyptic world with my good pal Mad Max, I'd fire it up. Barring that? Not a chance.
I see his reserve is not met yet. I wonder how much he wants for this motor. He says it's a running engine o No: and if so did he know anything about the engine before he put the gas to it? Tim
Those exhaust manifolds don't look like they have had heat in them for 20 years...photos must have been shot before he started it.I'd wanna hear and see it run before I spent big bucks........ Peace WildBill
I probably would have pre-oiled it with a drill. Maybe shot some PB blaster or Marvel in the cylinders first. I dont think he hurt the engine by doing it the way he did though. Ive had engines run on 20 year old gas and oil
Should be OK if he didnt let it run for a long time. He did say 20-30 minutes though. IMO if that was one motor run, then he ran it to long.
Once it starts, what the difference if he let it run for 20-30 minutes? If the engine had oil pressure , whats the harm? Maybe by not dumping the old oil? I probably would have done the same thing. Let it get up to temperature.
shoulda pulled the pan,new oil & primed it.as long as it wasnt frozen, that would be ok.20 yr old oil? :error:
I Might I might go see it, It is only 80 miles from my house. I Think before I went I would ask him about some new oil and other fluids first before he started it again, Maybe My Kat will have a new motor in it? o No: . I am a little worried about the trans and what the guy did when he unhooked every thing? Don
It's taking a chance, sure. But I've bought lots of long term resting cars and just started them after checking fluids. Never a problem.
Buick nailheads are BRUTS I bought a 64 wildcat and all I did to it was put a new battery looked at the fluids(T  opped them off if needed) and a set of tires and drove it 685 miles(sat in junkyard for long long time!!!)....One problem: forgot to check the brakes for leaks and brake fluid...about 200 miles into the trip I lost brakes...At least i was running 70 down interstate when I noticed! Anyways, the nailheads ARE Very Strong Bruts...If its got compression and some oil, and keeps its fluids, I think it will be fine...I think the looks of the engine have nothing to do with the way it will run! Just my two cents...
I think the trick is once their running again, drive it as if it were a new engine. I think they need a little break in time. Would'nt hurt anyway
