    Hi Michael,

Those 400/430 heads can be made to work, but honestly there would be very little advantage by switching; the combustion chambers might be slightly smaller, but not much. Also the early heads had troubles with cracks around the valvespring pockets.

My opinion is that you should invest some money in the your current heads by having valves guides replaced and a high quality valve grind done, if necessary.

If you are really planning to make some serious power, consider the aluminum heads from www.taperformance.com . They offer the biggest performance improvement for the money.

    :gp: Hello Devon,

HHHmmmm ok, i just found the heads and you know what happens

    - the fuse brakes !!:idea2:

But please give me a tip, dear Devon.

To get my buick in the 13 sec area...what would you do ?
    He takes high 14s...

    1. better distrubator ?

    2. Carburator - which ?

    3. Camshaft but which ?

    4. exhaust - must have headers ?
    - i got orig. headers 2 1/4" with glass packs..

    5. Intake manifold original or alu - cause of the orig. ram air..

What makes the most sence and don`t spend to much money for the moment - where to start ?

Ok, thousands of Questions - perhaps a thousand times asked till today

pleeaassee, help a real GS-Nut, where only very less Buicks are..

    Hi Michael,

You'll get a lot of different answers, but here are some of mine. You can search the message board for discussions on all of these subjects for detail:

    Ignition:

Aftermarket points conversion (points deletion) and high energy coil
    Aftermarket supression core plug wires
    Recurve distributor per http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=63475

    Air/Fuel Delivery/Carburetion:

    Stage 1 mechanical fuel pump*
    High-flow inline fuel filter
    800 cfm Quadrajet*
    High-flow air filter (K&N)
    Edelbrock Performer intake manifold*

    Camshaft/Valvetrain

    TA 212*

    Exhaust

    1-7/8" full length headers
    X-pipe
2-1/2" dimater full length dual exhaust
    Dynomax Mufflers

    Transmission

Stock, with medium range shift improvement kit
    Stock converter*
    High flow screen-type trans filter

    Rear axle

    Positraction (limited slip)
    gear ratio between 3.23:1 - 3.73:1
    Drag radials for strip use

I'll add more as I think of it.

Where I added the (*), you can consider upgrades depending on how crazy you want to go. For instance, you can raise the compression ratio with piston/head work, install a looser torque converter and take advantage of more camshaft. You could then go to the TA SP1 single plane intake manifold with more carburetion as well.

    Hello Devon,

it were your answers that i want to have !!

Thanks a lot - i think i look for an good distributor..

Sorry for my bad english but means this ?
Aftermarket points conversion (points deletion) and high energy coil
Coil is clear, i think it gives the Spark...
i got posi - off course and the K&N, too
    I took my ignition forward..
next will be the headers and then i must take a Cam in the block off course the 212 TA - it gives HP and Torque.

    thanks a lot.
    yours

Maybe this article will help. The original points are inside the distributor, they are the small electrical contacts that open and close, charging the coil each time for a spark. Since they eventually wear and degrade, it is now possible to replace them with an electronic trigger that is more reliable. Here's an article on a typical conversion:

After you get the distributer, and cam modified, I would change to the headers and dual 2.5" exhaust from your local shop. Have a magnaflow or other good muffler installed instead of the glasspacks in my opinion... The glass packs would be VERY LOUD with the cam, headers and high rpms...

By the way, you do have a tachometer to show your rpms dont you? if not get one with an udjustable rpm for a shift light so you can see the light go on when you hit that rpm. It is easy to over rev a powerfull engine so the tach with a light helps.

    Hello sean,:TU:

    thaks for your tips:Smarty:
, off course my GS has a tacho RPM in the dash - rare ? -and i never will built in on of these AUTOMETER RPMs - cause the buick should look like an old original US-Oldtimer. This guys arround the way except my friends have any idea about a 455 Buick GS - its every time funny, when i start up the engine and there faces are going to be very long:eek2: . Then they try to hide their DKW- and Audi-Oldtimer, so the buick don`t eat them - har, har!:Brow:
The buick has to be loud with the TA 212 - cause i love it and my son loves it - too !

The distributor now, only the part inside - not the hole distributor to change - this is what i understand - right ?
