For a T-400 there should be a switch mounted under the dash for "passing gear" which pretty much kicks in at WOT. You can wire in to that. It should apply +12V to the solenoid of the trans so you can tap into that wire.

My '65 didn't come with a T-400 so I mounted up a "large" microswitch that had a lever attachment on it so it would be activated by the gas pedal. I also ran an arming switch in series with the pedal one.

    So Mike...

All the trans wants is +12V to do the WOT downshift? Is there just a single prong/connector? I am doing a TH400 swap into a '66, and have been wondering about how best to go about this.

well, i dont have any kickdown stuff hooked up on my th400 . but i do have the universal bracket and the WOT switch. i have it bolted to the rear drivers side carb stud so when the secondary lower linkage moves to full throttle it triggers the switch, but i was a pain in the butt to get it all to fit and work right. never thought of the kickdown switch, wonder if a vacuum switch would work, so that when i get around 1 inch of vacuum it engages the nitrous? i just dont like the microswitch

Here's the type I was talking about. I believe a microswitch refers to the amount of pressure needed to activate it not necessarily its' size as can be seen here:

Not "micro" by any means. I've had the same type on my '65 for almost 30 years and it works fine. I have it mounted off to the top of where the pedal hits the floor. From the factory the T-400 may actually apply slightly before full throttle but it works fine for me. The different point at which they would be activated would be very subtle especially if you are flooring it.

All it takes is 12V to the DS solenoid to activate. Depending on the trans you could have 2 prongs. One is the DS and the other if it is a '67 and earlier Switch-Pitch trans would be for the SP solenoid or if it is a later model the other would be for an emission switch. Pretty easy to figure out. You should be able to hear the solenoid activate when everything is quiet on the emission style. A slight clicking sound. Lots of info on this site about that.

A vacuum switch sounds like it would work. Maybe 2" or less because some engines, depending on carb size, could develope a slight vacuum. I like the idea of keeping anything I can off the engine such as the activation switch. Less clutter.
