People need to know what make, year and model you are working on. Different years use different alts and wiring.

Has your wiring been all chopped up on the car? Can you post a picture to show what you are working with?

If it is original, the blue and white wires go to the regulator. Has it been converted to internal regulator?

It sounds like the harness is cut. The wires to the alt should be right in the area where the alt is. You plug the plug into the alt, than there is another wire with an eyelet, a thicker, heavier gauge wire usually red...I'm no sure about your year...that attaches to the back of the alt.

yes that part is there. now where do theses blue and white ones go. i have a brown wire some one has linked it to a red wire. is this the one to alt. or does it go to coil?

Ok...you will have to wait for someone who has a wiring chart for your year, or someone who's familiar with the colors...they vary. The distrib should have one black wire...that goes to neg (-) on the coil. Then you need a power wire to the (+) side of the coil. That MAY be the brown wire, but I'm not sure. The blue and white wires I don't know. Definitely sounds like the harness is cut. a pic would help....patience.........

Your Alt should have the 3 wires described above. Red would tie end near the starter. Blue and white to regulator.
Regulator will have 4 wires, from passenger side to driver should be blue (from alt) White (from alt), Red (from main harness tied in by starter) and brown. Brown will go to the firewall harness that goes in to the cabin and operates the "gen" light.

Coil wire should be pink, and tie in to the yellow wire on starter.

    Hope this helps.

actually what happend is there was a 400 pontiac in the car when i got it. the plug at the alternator is different (a little white square plug) with a red and white wire.the white wire is running back to a brown wire. i put in a 455 buick. now im tryin to put the correct plug in my alternator but now what with the correct blue and white. im also missing the regulator that goes on fire wall wich i also think these wires should be going to. sorry no pictures yet..soon

Ok...right around that time...GM changed the alts. Earlier, they were externally regulated alts, the regulator was mounted on the firewall, those alts had a squarish plug. Later alts were internally regulated, the regulator was built INTO the alt. Those alts have a rectangular like plug with the wires side by side in the plug. Maybe you are trying to use an older external alt on a car that should have an internal regulated alt. The Red heavy wire to the back of the alt is the same. It's HEAVY gauge, like 1/4" around and should be easy to spot.

NAPA sells the correct plug for the back of the externally regulated alternator and a replacement regulator for the firewall. The regulator accepts a harmonica plug. Does your wiring harnesss still have the male harmonica plug?

hey thanx for your time guys. should these wires be routed to some sort of conecter or should i be using like ..electrical conecters with eyelets. i see a picture of a GS and the wires look to be coming from alt. to a plug or somthing . is this the harness? i have no pink wire at coil either, it's red, could be wired to the other red wire at starter, hmm hmm. But, my dome lights and buzzer are working. no blinkers yet. lights work tail lights work. horn did work once but sounded like i killed it when i tried it, hasent honked since could have blown a fuse?

I have a suggestion. Get a new engine wiring harness since yours appears to have been hacked. In the short anfd long run you will be glad that you did. :Dou:

    good suggestion Jim.

We could all help you better if we could tell what you had. so pictures would be helpful, of the engine area and the alternator.

My responses are based on what "should" have been original. Doesn't have to be that way to work, there are many things you can do to make them work. None of my cars have factory wiring left, I create my own set up. But, make sure you have good wiring in place or it can be very dangerous.
