The windshield wipers in my '68 are doing something strange. When I turn them on, they work....but when I put the switch in the off position, they just keep running on their own! Eventually, they do shut off. It's like they catch on to the fact that they aren't supposed to be running anymore!:Do No: If I start the wipers when the car isn't completely warmed up, that seems to be the time when this happens most often. Also, I think I'm hearing a tapping sound coming from the wiper motor itself. So for all you troubleshooters out there, is this a faulty motor issue? A faulty switch? Both?:Do No: David

Your wipers are getting power when they are not supposed to, could be the switch, could be a short, there's a lot of work to figure this one out. Had a old rusty Dart one time and while I was driving the wipers started working on thier own then the horn started honking then I started smelling the smoke, wiring.
    Good Luck!

The ground from the wiper switch is missing. You need to run a seperate wire from the switch to ground or just clean it. The way those work is that the motor is always "on" so to speak, and it gets shut off by grounding a relay that is built into the motor.

Also check the contact of the plug that connects to the motor, as well as the ground strap on the wiper motor. they are notorious for a poor contact by the grommet. :Smarty:

My 68 GS400 does the exact same thing:Do No: I thought it was just my car that had a mind of it's own. I'll have to check out the ground also:Do No: Hope it works.

Actually, the switch or the internal switch could be the problem. If the control switch operates correctly, it is possible that the park switch is not opening, causing your problem. It is internal to the motor. Ray

Thanks everyone-I knew somebody had to know what to do. Now at the risk of sounding like a complete idiot, where exactly is this ground wire I'm hearing so much about? Is it connectd to the back of the switch? David

I added the ground wire to mine.........ran it from the mounting screw on the back side of the switch directly to the metal frame that the dash mounts to. :bglasses:
