I replaced my wiper motor on my Skylark but cant seem to get the peg on the back of the impeller to line up so that the washer works. It just make a loud thunk noise when I push the washer button in. Whats the trick?
It sound to me like maybe it is correctly mounted, but the one way valve assembly is preventing the fluid from being pumped through the jets. First, using a small wire, make sure that the jets are open all the way through. The one way valves operate through pressure opening them, and suction closing them. When the rubber bushed piston retracts, it pulls fluid out of the reservoir, and when it pushes, it forces the fluid out of the jets, which open, while the supply valve is pushed closed. Frequently, the valves get dirty and do not close properly. Ray
OK, Are you talking about cleaning the nozzles that squirt the fluid? and should there be a clunking noise when I push the washer button? This is why I thought I may not have it aligned. It just makes one loud click at first when I push the button. Is there not a procedure for aligning the impeller to the peg? The first pump I purchased had instructions for alignment but it was the wrong pump and when I exchanged the pump the correct pump did not come with instructions.
It is normal to hear a clunk when you hit the button. The Wipers should start running when you hit the button.
A replacement washer pump will come with a 1/8" steel rod, bent at 90 deg.. Each end about an inch long. This is the cam alignment pin for getting the pump drive aligned during the install. I had a copy of the directions here at one time, can't lay my fingers on them. Go back to the supplier, see if he has a washer pump & ask if you can photocopy the instructions. The pin you can easily make.
If you check in the wiper section of a 'shop manual' the instructions for aligning the washer pump to the wiper motor are specified. Don't operate the washer without the alignment completed, as the washer pump may be damaged ! :TU:
