I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but here I go. I replaced the windshield washer motor on my 70 convertible. Now, every time I turn on the windshield wipers, it starts squirting fluid at me. I have a new engine harness. Is there something wrong somewhere else? HELP!! Thanks. Phil Sedlon
Mine won't turn on. Wanna trade? That darn pump mechanism is a seemingly complex assembly. After messing around with these cars for 17 years (and two have had bad pumps) I've yet to really figure out how it works.
Here's what my '71 Fisher manual has to say about it.. [Washer Pumps Continuously When Wiper Is On (On The Car)] 1. Disconnect wiring from washer pump. If pump shuts off, trouble is in wiring or switch. 2. If pump fails to shut off in step 1, remove pump assembly from car for further checking. I'll scan the three wireing diagrams the book has and put here in an edit. Have to clear off scanner first.. heh Scott
I already tried disconnecting the wiring. No luck. A friend has a service manual and I talked to him last night. I guess you have to set a pin in the wiper motor and then set the pickup arm in the washer motor, etc etc blah blah blah. Anyway, it sounds like it's going to be a pain. We'll get to it someday, as the only time the car gets wet now is when I wash it. Thanks. I thought this would be a simple fix. Guess not.
Ok, glad I don't have to scan anything.. Systems being a !@#$% Ever consider getting another new one and trying it? Or maybe just another new washer motor? You could have gotten a faulty motor somewhere.. A pin and such eh, most I had to do was mount it up and clean the contacts. Hope one day ya get it fixed. Scott
I don't know if a 70 motor/pump is close to a 76 but mine did the same thing. There is (from what I remember) a little solinoid that pulls some piece of metal onto a racheting thing so when it starts it will pump 4 or 5 passes of the wipers and then quit. mine would never disengage, all worn and loose stuff in there. i tried messin around, but it would always eventually stay on. (wipers too, not just fluid squirting) My soulution was to buy a universal electric pump and hook it up to the wires that went to the solonoid or whatever it was.o No:
the service manual does have a defined process for re-installing the washer pump . the pump on my 72gs was crapped when i bought the car. i bought an electric replacement pump . works fine . gerry 72gs350
Ok goto autostore tell them u need a small generic washer motor unplug your existing one hook up the small 12 volt washer motor with some wires and spade connectors. Buy a small white 3 way water line splitter from helps section of auto store. Mount the small motor above the brake booster. If you need a picture let me know I did it to my car as a temporary fix. There you have it a 15$ fix to a headache with no original wires cut. Unless it's a total show car I don't think it's worth the must have it working headache.:Brow:
My '70 did the same thing. It was a common wire from the pump to the wiper motor that had gone bad. When I was checking the pump over, it actually broke off at the conector. I McGyvered it with my favorite wiring donor- a broken coffee machine. I can only assume it was a ground common to the two.
In the process of fixing mine I found out that there is a relay which unlatches a spindle that in tern moved a small pump system. The relay was good so what this means is the pump's O-ring isn't sealing. If I did this rite there should be a picture of the piece below.
I'm about to change my wiper's motor . If someone has the electric diagram , that would help me a lot . The "new" motor and the actual (which is working at only 1 speed) doesn't have the same wiring , there is some more cable on the new one for the pump I guess , but the motor itself have the very same fit . but most important...make sure it is grounded correctly!!!new firewall paint is a problem,but make sure one of the three mounting screws makes contact with the metal body of the wiper motor and grounds to the fire wall.rubber grommets are not current conductive.:Brow:
I owe you guys one! You've helped my mental health. I spent 5 hours the other day working on 2 different pumps and couldn't get either to work properly. Just when I thought I had it there was another pin or cam or solenoid or alignment or ramp or armature giving me fits. It could well be the ground as the firewall was just repainted.
