Looked at a 70' Convertible Custom on Friday and will make the guy an offer on Tuesday. Car has 5-7 rot holes in the dash and on the posts, the worst is about 4-5 inches long and from inside lip to outside roll on the post infront of driver. Does this sound like a repairable problem or should I just plan on parting it out. This car has a 430 bored 40 over and a 400 trans. out of a 68' Wildcat. I did about 80% of the work on my 72' Custom and really want another car but can wait on a better candidate if this needs to be parted out. Wife said she doesn't mind me getting car to part out as we can put the money made into the next car.
I jumped into a similar situation back in 1998 with my car. It has taken me 6 years to re-work the car and I still can't decide if it was worth it. Being a ragtop, I'd say yes. Being a Skylark, then no. Just be sure the convertible frame is OK, and see if it will work correctly. Otherwise, big $$$ are going to be spent in this area. I have an extra dash that I'll never use. It is a saddle color from a 1970 Skylark. If you can use it let me know. Russ Waters 1970 Skylark Convertible 455
Usually what ever size rot hole there is, by the time it is ground/sanded down to "good" metal, the hole probably will be much larger. I am not saying that the repairs can't be done. Anything can usually be patched if there is enough good metal left. You have to determine how much of the actual metal is bad and how much time/money you are willing to send on it.
Russ Thanks for the dash offer. I think I might just part it out. He has done some of the body work and put an Earl Shive special paint job on it. Where abouts in GA. are you. I am building Cell Towers in the Eastman area and need to find boneyards around there to pass the time.
Ted, When you get the car, let me know. I may be interested in some "parts" Catch you at Monday's meeting!
What kind of car is it? Most every (if not all) Buick that was a convertible in 1970 was a "Custom". It's a Skylark Custom, I assume?
