Window Regulator - Refurbishment?

    Hey everybody,
I am after some advice. I am having some issues with my rear window quarter. When I purchased my Riv, it did not go down properly. After investigating, I found that the regulator was not working properly as the pin had popped out of the circular disc at the bottom (a common issue I am guessing.)

I fixed it and all seemed ok. It broke again today and after fixing it again, it is stiff and popped out again under testing. It is not just that part but also the guiding parts either side that are loose and the whole thing is just tired.

What is the best thing to do in this scenario? Are there repo units? Is it better to refurb? Any advice is greatly appreciated as always!

They probably make reproductions, but I'm not familiar with what interchanges with a 72 Rivera (I know you can get them for Skylarks/A bodies). You might see if someone here has a good one they can sell/ship to the UK.

You'd probably need to find a good used unit froma parts car. The plastic window rollers are available. You would need to take them out and match them up as there are a few variations. Replacing the rollers will take most of the slop out of the window when you roll it up.

I replaced the rollers on my quarter windows and now they roll up effortlessly. No need to use two hands and help them up anymore. You'll need a special tool to remove the discs that hold in the rollers though. The tool is readily available .

Thanks Jason, that's all really useful information. In that case I might try refurbishing with just replacing the plastic rollers. Did you do that on a '72 Riv by any chance? Are the removal tools these? https://www.amazon.co.uk/EWK-Window-Handle-Spring-REMOVAL/dp/B00H8K8S0O

I have a related question to the refurbishment of window regulators (and power window motors). What works best to clean off all the old hardened grease?

Hey Ken, I would use a degreaser, which will vary according to geographic location and opinion. I personally have used this and find it works well:

I used it in my engine bay and when left on for a bit turned all of the oil and residue to liquid that was then easily removable.

You could then use Isopropyl alcohol to clean away remaining residue and make a nice clean surface. Once that is done, you could then use either:

    or
    https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/prod...PAAp3mrSFIDPpcznThhoCToMQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I have personally never used dry lubricant but really like the idea as over time the crap would not adhere to the lubricant and in theory the problem should not reoccur. I have used white lithium grease a lot and it is amazing stuff.

Finally, if you have an ultrasonic cleaner (or want to invest in one - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ultrason...var=540797513072&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649) then that would do a great job at cleaning the metal parts of the regulator with little effort.

    Hope that's useful.

Jason, just a follow-up question - when you say you replaced the rollers, do you mean just the plastic roller at the bottom, like this:
    https://www.opgi.com/window/window-...rs14/roller-quarter-window-guide-cc28343.html

Do you know anywhere that I can get the other parts, such as the plastic guides that sit either side of the regulator?

You might contact one of a handful of hood hinge rebuilders. It might be in their area of ability/expertise. "Willie" is one of them.

Thanks for the advice. I have some part suppliers scouring around seeing if they can find something at the moment. I am actually thinking that I will take the whole thing out and get some custom parts made. Possibly use this company:
