the cars going to be dropped an inch, i just want to know if the 20's are going to clear the fenders...i say a beautifull yellow one on here with 19's, hopin the extra 1" wont be a prob...was thinking 225/35/20 might be better in front...

Please don't. 20" rims are all right for the just-out-of-high-school set with the backwards baseball cap wearin eminem listining bling bling boys, and you can do that to a 1986 t-bird, but please don't ruin the classic look of a 72 Skylark. I have seen Wheel Vintiques makes some pretty large repros of the original ralley rims and there are torque thrusts out there in big sizes too that retain a 60's era class, but I wouldn't go over 17" in diameter. Besides, someone will probably car jack you for the rims and put them on a Blazer and you'll be out a bunch of money you could have put into the engine. Do what you want, it's your money, but for a car to look good there should be a consistant theme throughout, I used to work with a guy who had a friend with a Yukon Denali with over $16,000 in the rims and tires, yeah, it was stollen and insurance didn't cover the wheels, just the truck. It seems this guy thought his worth as a human being was tied to other people's opinion of him, and how impressive his ride was dictated his self esteem. Poor guy, the only person you have to impress is YOU. I myself would rather be able to blow the doors off ANY car I pull up next to. But that's me, and I'm not you. One last word on another point, the larger diameter tire/wheel combo you run the less your brakes will stop you. (Put your hand in front of you with your thumb touching your chest, have a friend push your hand to the side while you try to hold it in place, doesn't move does it? Now put your arm straight out in front of you as far as you can reach, he can move your hand pretty easy right? This is over simplifying things a bit, but the larger the diameter wheel, the longer a lever the brakes have to work on. It's a physics thing but as pretty as the wheels look, they don't look good when you slam into the back of a bus) Good Luck

    you guys are harsh...

Help him or don't reply- simple- don't insult the guy, new or not. Damn- we all did stuff when we were younger that we look back on and laugh. Give the guy a break. My mom told me if i didn't have someting nice to say, don't say anything at all. Could be worse- he could be putting a SBC in it...let the flaming begin..... oh yeah....the 20's will fit, with the drop, just check your backspacing.....

I agree with Freak that 18/20 are going to be easier. Obviously 20's will fit, but make sure the OD doesn't get out of wack. The leverage arm theory only applies if the OD gets out of control. Sure it will likely get heavier than 14*6 with 215's, but it does reduce the weight at the extreme a little. Going back to leverage arms, this is the bowling ball versus dumb bell.

You're going to want to keep the OD to about 27" or turning could be a challenge. I'd say 8" frt and 9" rear with say a 235 frt and 265 rear max. Think through the BS.

If this is for cruising and looks: fine. If its for handling, remember that these cars with STOCK geometry are not designed for low profile radials. They have a complete different scrub angle built into them.

Don't fret, guys used to freak out by my 18" BBS on my longhood 911 a few years back. Now they realize that tire choice is better and brake options increase with oversize rims.....others have gone this route now.

I agree with the 18-20 setup. I don't think those wheels fit the car. Try some torque thrust II or cragar SS's or similiar. 20's should fit with the right offset though

I run 20's(255/35/20's) on my daily driver on my b-body wagon

    Here is a pic

One's ability to spot lack of taste and being a follow-the-leader cuzz it's cool, is hardly "ignorance" as you put it.... :error:

This website lacks "pimps" and they rides. I'm sure the net has many sites that will help you to ruin your car, get ahold of Foose....maybe he can help you do such as is his "spec-i-al-i-ty"! I'm sure E-Bay sells gold-toof-caps too! :Dou:

72buicklark how about a name? Don't let some of these comments bother you. It's your car, you do what you want with it. Although I don't care for some of the things people do to their cars I keep my oponions to myself as others should too.

I know this is going to pi$$ some people off but oh well. I regularly surf the Chevelle, Pontiac, and other car forums and this one is the worst for guys getting uptight because someone wants to alter the look of their car. I'm sure when I carry out my vision of 17" aftermarket wheels, a lowered suspension, big brakes and a Tremec 5-speed guys will be haten on me too.

On this board it's either "leave it stock" or "you don't fit in".

    Sad but true.

    Good luck with your project.

    Everyone else, flame away. :bglasses:

Kerry I too find your comments a little disturbing as well. Aren't mods supposed to put a lid on stuff like this instead of throwing gas on it?

As much as I hate big wheels on old cars I am willing to answer a legitimate question. Checked the specs and they should work.

I hope you know that you will have problems with ride and handling. The front ends on these old cars do not have the correct camber curves for low profile tires to work well. Also will ride will suffer and wheels will be easily damaged. If you are going to drive it a lot this is not the best choice. Just for show and it should work ok.

Stock is boring, cut it up!

Your best bet is to probably see if one of your local rim shops does test fitting, then they can give you the measurements.

You mentioned you wanted to lower it an inch, trust me, you'll want to go lower. 1" isnt noticible enough.

I was going the same route, until I ended up doing air ride to lay the car on the ground, creating a cool river of sparks when you drive down the street at night

Some members here must forget that wheels are changable, yet they still like to tell you you just ruined your car by putting them on? How? Mullets cutting off brain circulation :Do No:

I think all these harsh comments should be left in each of your brains,
everyone has their own individual tastes and that to me is wondeful.I
would never by a Cuda for example because it isn't my taste, but to the
next guy it's the best thing in the world.I feel these vasts variances in
interests is what makes the car hobby so exciting, everyone expresses
themselves within their tastes.I agree handing is always an issue and
should be looked into before major modifications are made, but other
than that, this is a free country and do with it what YOU LIKE.My two
    cents on the matter,Curtis.

ps. I agree moderators should moderate or be incouraging, not discouraging. :beer
