Recently i saw a '66 skylark sitting at a local used car dealership (4 door, doh!) in surprisingly good shape. I decided to check what it had under the hood. It looked like a nailhead to me which made me think it was a 401 (or something more exciting like a 425). On closer examination of the air cleaner (it was dark out so i didn't see the sticker on the air cleaner right off the bat) I saw a sticker that said 'Wildcat 310'. Confused, i did as any other person would and ran away declaring it was made by a witch. Anywho, if anyone could tell me what type of motor it is, it would be much appreciated. Thanx, Patrick
Assuming the air cleaner ID correctly matches the engine, it's a 300 Buick small block, not a nailhead of any displacement. Buick tended to label engines based on torque output, 'cause it made them seem "bigger" than they really were. A triumph of "marketing" over "truth".
Thanx a lot i figured it was one of the smaller displacing motors cause they used torque figures and 310 didn't seem like a very high torque number, i think it looked like nailhead cause there really wasn't much light at all, but who knows. Thanx, Patrick
