Wife's Aurora flipped out... BIGTIME

    NJBuickRacer I'd rather be racing...

Does the SES light come on with key on, engine off? Check your battery voltage, both running and off. If I remember right the red wire at pcm pin 75 used to get poor pin fit problems and not give the correct duty cycle command to the alternator. Also check for AC ripple voltage at the alternator, if a diode in the rectifier bridge went bad you will have major problems as none of the sensor readings will be correct and the car goes haywire. As far as the trans, it sounds like it went into limp mode, the PCM commanded only the 2nd gear solenoid active because it sensed a problem(possibly false). Shoot me an email if you want to go over any more details and I'll be glad to pass along my suggestions and attempt to diagnose via long distance

Man, I really appreciate all the support. But I dropped the Aurora (or as I refer to it, the "psycho car") off at the dealer this evening and they are supposed to look at it in the morning.

    Paul,

I didn't know you had a scanner, I should have checked with you first. I pulled the batter out and looked the cables over, they appeared to look brand new (very clean).

    Buick_350X,

I think you may be right, I will probably start looking for another wife-mobile soon if I can get this current problem sorted out.

    Artie,

Thanks for the offer. The SES light does not come on with the engine running or just by turning the key. Are you saying the alternator might be the culprit? You kind of lost me back there at all that "rectifier bridge" stuff. I have heard the alternators in these cars can overcharge and ruin any one of the modules, or multiple modules. What exactly is it about these alternators that causes this? All voltage readings appear to be normal (between 12.2 - 14.0 if I remember correctly) when idling and driving. The A/C stopped blowing cold, does the computer control this or could this be the problem? I had a buddy with a '92 caddy that had the A/C compressor go out and the transmission stopped shifting similar to my car, although he didn't have any of the electrical wierdness I am having.

I am going to see what the dealer comes up with and if you don't mind I will probably shoot you an email and also post their diagnosis here to see if they are being straight with me (I just don't quite trust them 'cause I have not had any dealings with them).

    Thanks again to everyone,

    Chris

I wonder if a newer Regal would suite your wife??? It has the same sleek looking body style as the Auora but is also a deamon when you stomp on the pedal.

Women/girls in general just like nice looking sleek cars. Doesn't matter what it is, long as it looks nice.

Course she may catch on when you ask to drive it often.

Well, I just got news from the Olds dealer today. They are telling me that the PCM is the problem. I have suspected it since the begining but I still don't know where it is located.

They are supposed to order the part and get it here Monday. Cost to swap out this little piece of silicon: $365.

Does this sound right? Does the PCM control the A/C?

    Thanks,

    Chris

    $182 PART $183 LABOR?
Sounds okay. Probably $91.50 an hour. Last Riviera we did the ECM was under the rear seat. 95 Aurora ECM is under the dash on the passengers side. Near the kick panel.

    Yup,
Got mine in July, SC3800 motor. It flies, and gets 28 MPG on the open road. The Aurora, and Riviera are built on the same platform, but the Riv has the heart of a Buick :TU:

I did a windshield replacement in one of those. Had to pick it up and deliver it. Those are one sweet ride! :TU:

Well we got 3 votes so far

Dump the Aurora and get a Riviera. Same car, better parts.

I'm sure my wife would be willing to swap for a Riviera, as someone said as long as the car is "cute" she is happy. Unfortunately, we need a 4-door to ease in child transportation duty. Getting car seats in and out and hauling all the "equipment" that goes with kids.

How about a Grand Prix GTP or supercharged Bonnie? Although, I have had my share of problems with the first generation supercharged Bonneville, I wouldn't be opposed to a newer one.

At any rate, we'll see if the dealer was right about that PCM tomorrow.

Hemi Magnum wagon. Seen one in black and it was sweet and mean. The 05 is gonna be AWD so they say, so they will be eager to sell the 04 stock. Its that time of year for new car deals.

UPDATE: the Aurora is back on the road :beer :Brow:

I guess that stupid little computer fixed everything right up. I think it runs better now than it ever has since we have had it. Maybe the computer had a 'virus' the whole time

    Thanks for all the support!!
