Just found out that my wife got me a 455 for Christmas! I'm pretty stoked about it... It's a '73 engine, so I'm doing some looking up to see what I've got exactly.

    Merry Christmas guys!

Ya I think I'll have to keep her.

Anybody have some factory specs on the '73 engine like compression ratio, hp and torque, whatever?

She's a keeper! Not many women I know help their men proceed with an old car build.

Should be an advertised 8.5:1 compression ratio.

The base 455 was rated at 225hp @ 4000 rpm, torque was 360 @ 2600 rpm. The '73 GS could get a Stage 1 rated at 270 hp @ 4400 rpm, torque 390 @ 3000 rpm. Ratings in SAE net. The block should already have the larger 5/8" oil suction line from the sump to the front of the engine.

Did she wrap it? How did she wrestle it under the tree? I would not ever cross her.

1973 is a favorite year for some machinist. A 600 lb. iron 455, christmas present is very very cool! you are a very lucky man. Someone needs to show this thread to the Mad girlfriend, who says her boyfriend spends too much time in V8 Buick website. I am a fan of your wife for giving a 455 for Christmas!

Thanks for the info. What made the difference between the lower powered 73 and the earlier engines? Is it just the fact that the numbers are SAE Net, or are there other differences such as pistons and heads to bring the compression down?

360 pounds of net torque ain't half bad for a 8.5:1 compression. Heck that sucker wouldn't ping no matter what you put in it lol.

I think the 73 455s do well with a sonic check wich measures core shift. also they have the larger improved oiling return holes. 75-76 blue bolcks have a high nickel content.

Ya I'm hoping she'll do well on the sonic check. Be a bummer if not...

I'll have to work on that. We just got back into town yesterday, and my Skylark is now covered in a ton of snow! There's not really that much snow, but it must have gotten pretty windy because there are huge drifts up against everything. It took me a few hours to dig my garage out.
