Wierd set up on Vacuum Advance Canister...

    From a previous thread , you folks have know I have been fighting a battle with my 455 in my Regal... and one of the things I am going to final address is my timing and I am going to follow it to a T as recomended LARRY70GS in the thread... http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?63475-Power-Timing-your-Buick-V8&referrerid=589.

    He made mention of restricting the vacuum advance to just 8* or 10* and explained the procedure on how to set intial timing, then set up your vacuum advance timing, there are some pictures at the bottom of his information post showing what he did to limit one.

    I had on hand an untouched unopened "76" HEI Distbutor and used the orginal weights and spring from it to give a base to start from, however I seen this already on the FACTORY vacuum advance canister , a restrictor or travel limiter just spot welded to the slide arm groove plate...

    Question #1 can this be used as the restrictor needed for my set up? and Question #2 if not can I simply make a similar plate and just use the hold screw to hold both it and the groove plate

    That looks stock to me. Not sure what you want to do, break the welds and re position it? You have to restrict the pull pin travel to limit the advance.

    Set the total timing, not the initial.

    You can track down part numbers for vacuum advance canisters giving desirable advance charicteristics, or you can work with what you have if it's in good condition. Brazing/welding/screwing a plate to limit travel affects the amount of advance, but not the vacuum needed to apply and release the advance canister. If the canister spring is too stiff or too weak, the canister may still not be suitable for the application.
