If your wanting to run the same size up front and back you don't want to go larger than a 245, if your just looking for the largest you can go in the back Chris is right a 275 is a good fit, if you got custom backspaced wheels you can squeeze a 295 in there but it won't happen with the stock rallyes.
I'm running 225's in the front and 275's in the rear.

I have seen 275's on the back with no cutting but not with the factory wheel backspacing. Even then it is just trimming the moulding down on the unseen side.

I like the 275/50 because of the 26" height.

I decided to use 235/60-15 BFG DR, same 26" height and no problems at all. These tires do stick well, I ran a 1.8 60' at National Trail but still have to be careful and pedal lightly from a stand still. From a roll they stick excellent.

Greg is right, I should have mentioned that I'm running 16x8's with 5" of backspacing, (275-55-16 tire) in the rear, and 16x7 fronts with 4" of backspacing and 225-60-16 tires.

I use 275/60 r15 BF Goodrich on my 71 GS. These are 28" tall. Just a mere 2" over stock wheels, so there is plenty of height for that. There is about 5/8" of clearance to the lip of the quarter. It fills the wheel well nicely. I don't think I could have went any bigger without some modification.

I did alot of looking aound this site before making this change. It was really a split decision as to whether you would have to trim the lip of the quarter to prevent rub. Some do and some don't. But I don't recall anyone having to do more than trim the lip for clearance. I think every car is just a little different.

    I hope this helps you,

Len i would love to see 295's stuffed in the 68/69 wheel wells.

that would be an awesome sight, even better than the 325's on the back of the 70-72 cars.

There's a young guy in our club that lives down in SanDiego, he has a Blue 69 Stage 1 with 295's in the back, he also has 3" tailpipes, man you talk about tight! There's no room for error (or even a hard bump). Looks sweet though.
I may try 295s next time around on tires, but with mine being brand new that'll be awhile.

Len if you ever get a chance get a pic and find out what the wheel width and back spacing is.

Wow could i ever hook with 295 DR.
