My understanding was that it wasn't actually failing, but it showed signs that it would have eventually been a problem had it not been caught. Jim's exact words were,

"I also checked the rod and mains, and I saw some distress of the number 4 main bearing.. so we are going to have to go with a by-pass line, and I am going to drill out the rear of the passenger side main galley, to make sure we have solid oil volume available to the number 4 main.

We kind of outperformed the oil mods I did on this block, as I expected it to be in the 550-570 range, 600 is another program all together. By pass line, and the bigger main galley is required on this one. Rod bearings looked fine, but that number 4 main is always the first to show distress. Oil film on that one was breaking down under load."

Jim also said there was a very small possibility that the crank was flexing because of a hairline crack in one of the rod journals, so he had the crank checked to be sure. It checked out fine It's things like this that make me happy Jim is the one building my engine. I know he won't ship it to me until it is perfect.

My iron headed motor is running great. It just feels like I have the parking brake on compared to when I had the aluminum heads and SP1:laugh: I took it for a hundred mile round trip yesterday to Phil Roitman's annual Buick Barbecue, and then hit a cruise night on the way home. I'd be going nuts if I couldn't drive my car.:TU:

In my case, it was definitely oil starvation. I had just put in a RV cam and made various mods to the engine (with my friend's help), including a high-volume low-pressure oil pump. My mistake was not changing the oil pan to increase capacity and compensate for the new pump. All it took was one quart low at freeway speed to hand-grenade the entire engine.

All rods are forged, but not all are made equally!!!! I prefer having a engine shut off on my oil sensor and light. When my sensor reach's 15 psi the engine shuts down, My light is set at 20 psi. A oil accumulator is with out a doubt a engine saver.... I'm going to ask some crank companies to see if they can make a cast steel crank to farther help our quest.
