Can you see what is wrong in this picture? (Besides the rusty bowl!!!)

This car was running when it left my hands 3 months ago. Does anyone remember the 73 Riv I bought about 4 or 5 months ago and harvested the posi unit for my convertible?

Yeah, the kid who bought it called me back and asked my advice for carb rebuilders. I mentioned John Osborne and a couple other local guys. I also mentioned that I could do it for $100 minus the core. MY MISTAKE! He agreed to my terms and I built him an 800cfm carb and gave it to him yesterday. In return, I received my money and his old core.

Unbeknownst to me (is that a word?), his dad told me this: "We don't even know if this is the problem! There is gas getting to the carb, but it won't start!" I shuddered and thought to myself, "They just wasted their money and my time building a carb."

I sent them on their way, with a new carb and an offer to help them get it tuned up this weekend. They have no timing light or vac gauge:Dou: so I assume I will be getting a call very soon.

Anyway, I tore the carb down tonight and noticed there was NO gas in the fuel bowl.....bone dry.:puzzled:

Now, can you guess why? Keep in mind that they have been driving this car.

They are trying to save money by running it on water?

Water injection is a great way to prevent detonation - they must be running 14 to 1 compression!

Is there a hole in it? Corrosion?

The needle was stuck in the seat....allowing no gas to get into the bowl.

Usually when you pull the float out, the needle comes with it attached with a small hook, but the hook was also missing. I'm really not sure how it ever ran in the first place!

I bet that was a carb they just had setting on a shelf.

I think Lens on to something. That definitely was not on a motor that was just run.I have some spare carbs for parts that sat around a long time and never seen one look that bad.Something fishy here!

Supposing the car started with the "new" carb, you'll be getting a call very soon. :bglasses:

Well, I was the owner of this car for about 2 months last Oct-Nov. and this was the carb that was on it. These guys aren't smart enough (car-wise) to swap in that manual choke onto it before I got my hands on it again. My guess is, they parked it for the winter right after they got it in Dec. And then they tried to start it a couple weeks ago.

It had been having problems with backfiring, and I am guessing maybe one of the explosions popped the pin off the needle.

I have seen quite a few rusty qjets, so I wasn't surprised to see rust in the bottom. This is a little more extreme than I was expecting though.

Oh yeah, the car ran like complete crap. It has a homemade choke linkage going to the choke flap. It kept binding up inside causing the choke to stay closed most of the time.

I was a mess, but yesterday, I found a buyer for this carb. I will be rebuilding it with good parts that are MADE for it. It should run well:TU: He's putting it on his 70 Riv to replace the crappy Edelbrock 750 he's got on it now.
