I was drivin my Skylark today. Its only been about a week and a half since i drove it last. I stopped at a light after drivin for about 20 minutes and it just cut off. It started right back up and i drove it about another 5 minutes to my destination and it was sputtering like it wasnt getting gas the whole way there. It ran fine on the way home. It has sputtered a few times before but never cut off while driving. However sometimes when i power brake :3gears: , it cuts off as soon as i let off the gas.

What could be the problem? :Do No:

doest it sputter like it wants to stall only when at idle?

could be a carb issue(choke not working...completely open)...or ignition issue

Not alot, just occasionally. But every time ive power braked it it has stalled when i let off the gas.

Sounds like a clogged fuel filter, a bad fuel pump (most likely), or a restriction.

You aren't out of gas, are you?

How much are fuel pumps to replace? A hassle?

Haha no, actually i had put gas in it when i left, so about 20 minutes before it happened.

Easy deal. Around 20 bux anywhere. 10 minutes to replace. Hint: put the car at TDC before you start.

Yes, sounds like something is holding the gas back. I had a plugged return line, and it would act the same. On long trips it would just eventually die, but start after sitting a few minutes.

My boat had a similar problem today. Fuel filter let trash get by. New (different) filter and cleaned all carb passages, and its back to terrorizing the lake.

Sounds like i got some possible solutions. Looks like ill have to go check the lines, pump, and filter.
    Thanks for the input :TU:

Sounds like the throttle return dashpot, is either missing or not working right.

I don't know if 350s have an Idle Stop Solenoid , but since it is a 72 , I can tell you that when somebody swaps the heads , intake and carb to 1971 stuff , that not having the ISS will cause it to choke the motor when decellerating . RPMs come down IMMEDIATELY and the motor quits when your foot comes off the gas . If 350 have the ISS , it might be malfunctioning occassionally .:Do No:

I hate problems like this. Can be so many different things. Guess ill have to check all sorts of stuff.

I've never heard of this. But I learn something about every time I log on here.... Why should you put it at TDC before starting it up after a fuel pump swap?

He should have said "before you begin the pump change".

That way you're not fighting the camshaft's fuel pump eccentric when tightening the pump bolts.

    TDC = Top Dead Center.

The exact moment when #1 piston is at the top end of it's firing stroke.
(Both valves are closed, and your timing marker is at "0")

Top Dead Center happens twice during the four stroke cycle. Specifically for this case, we're referring to TDC on the compression stroke, not the exhaust. Sometimes a picture is worth 1000 words:

1BadWagon i got too many parts.....

you should check the basics before you go swapping parts. i had a similar problem on my 67 sportwagon and it turned out that there was a hole in the rubber fuel line by the gas tank.
