I played with the timing a little and got substantial inprovment but in the end fitured out the mechanical advace wasnt working as it should in the Big Cap HEI. I finally got a little time to take the distributor cap off and inspect the weights. They were pretty messy, I sprayed some WD40 on then and cleand them up a bit and then noticed that one weight is really worn on the post that holds it on. I'll attach a picture.
In the picture, look at the bottom weight. You can see the gap around the post that holds it on. Decided I am going to get the original distributor rebuilt with the HEI goodies at the recomendation of Larry.
