I used one back in the day. It's a nice all around cam. Doesn't require valve springs or high compression. Has a noticeable lope, but nothing crazy. Do not expect to gain gobs of power with it alone versus a stock cam. It does like ported heads. You won't see me using any aftermarket cams for the next few years. I am just thankful to have a reliable stock cammed engine after my last engine took a dump.
I ran a ta 118 in my old 350 ran awesome. ta intake holley 750 dbl pumper with mech. sec. mallory uni ignition hooker headers 2 1/2" exhaust. th400 10" TCI 3500 converter 12 bolt with 4:10's i drove it everyday and never had an issue as far as smooth on the street
I am a huge fan of the ta212 cam. I have used several with great results for mild engines...... The 212 lets you keep the good low rpm torque where as many other larger cams give the torque away in favor of a bit of extra hp in the higher rpms...
Can you stuff it into a stock low-comp. 350 without any mods? Does it do you (under these circumstances) any good, e.g rpm, hp or trq-wise? Jens
yes, I have ran the TA212 cam in a stock 350 and it ran great! It gained torque and hp from 2000 to 5800 rpms. The stock cam is a bit better from idle to 2000 rpms and the 212 is WAY better everywhere else.... The stock cam dies at 4800 rpms the 212 will pull hard to 5400 rpms with a stock engine and still pull ok at 5800 rpms. If ported heads and carb tuning is done the 212 cam is not optimal, in my opinion the 212 is best in a stock or neer stock build. Make sure you replace the timing set, lifters ect when you do this.... I also suggest the TA stage 1 valve springs to replace the old worn out ones.
Have a 212 in my car and love it. Motor is all stock with 3.23 gear and a 2500stall converter that gives it some jump of the line. Has enough lope so you know its not stock. Provides plenty of vacuum.
TA_284-88H in my 350 and it seems to be MUCH better than stock with new lifters and double roller timing set and conversion to electric fuel pump.
Chuck, My assumption is with just a cam swap the old bearings were used. That is my plan with mine but I've got a low miler... Lets see what the rest have to say!
It is normally best to add new cam bearings however if your oil pressure is good then just swap in the cam.
Ok, pretty straight forward build - 69 GS350 base engine...block ended up being cracked so I bought another bare block from Carmen. 69 crank and rods (+ ARP bolts) were good, new .030 pistons from TA... Carmen did the Q-jet, valve job ( 69 heads) and rebuilt the stock rockers. No porting Intake untouched. I did get the exhaust manifolds ported by Greg G, and have the TA 2.5 system out to the back. The car still has the peg leg 2.78:1 rear- to compensate I got the TH350 with a low (1st) gear set and a higher stall convertor. It has great torque off the line; I feel there is no downside to the highway gear as the thing launches so well... Great street driving feel and does fine on the highway. And the thing sounds like a beast, too much fun! :beers2:
