I REALLY don't want to have to by 20 different colors and gauges of wire and do it myself. I just want the engine harness duplicated from my original. Just from the firewall bulkhead connector on to the engine. I have had no luck finding anyone on the web. Painless laughed at me. They only do certain models, and even then, they're generic. Who will duplicate a harness?
Jeff, these guys do the wiring harnesses we use in our resto's.. they don't list anything for the Riv, but call them up, and see if you can send in yours, for them to duplicate. They are good to work with. http://www.wiringharness.com/ JW PS... Alan W... they do have the end of the harness of the PW you are looking for, as they do list the entire harness in the catalog. Their stuff is not cheap... but very good...
Yardley, I just got an engine harness from M&H and it was great, it was for a BB transplant in my 66 GS and they got everything right. I know that you are not doing a transplant, but that just shows their insight into that kind of stuff. I have a near pristine wire harness for a `69 Riv (it's not for sale) but I was just thinking about sending it to them so they can duplicate it. If you talk to them and they are interested I can send it. It is used but in excellent condition. Dave
I think thats the company Year One gets their harnesses from, does anyone know if they make the intermediate harnesses for `64-67?thats the flat wires that run along the floor from the fron to the rear. Thanks
They list all of the wiring including the intermediate for the `64-`67's. Here is their website http://www.wiringharness.com/ Dave
I got the blow off from them. They refuse to use my bulkhead connector and just replace the wires. They only make new ones. He flat out said they "don't do any Riviera stuff". What the hell is so difficult?!?! All they need to do is remove one wire and replace it with a new one of the same color and length as the one they take out! I suppose I'll be buying a dozen spools of different colored wire and a box of spade connectors and doing it myself this winter. I just can't believe this. I can get a harness for a freaking 1919 Huppmobile, but heaven forbid you should own a Riviera! Anyone know where I can get a LOT of different colored spools of wire? All I ever see is red, black and maybe purple.
I got the same reaction from Ken here. He sounded scared to death to do this. I even offered to send him schematics, but he blew me off. Fine. I've never seen anything like this. I'll do it myself. I found a website with wire. I know they don't have all the correct colors, but 18 gauge wire is $7 for 100 feet minimum, and 14 ga wire is $8 for 100 ft minimum. I'll buy a couple hundred dollars worth of wire and a box of spade connectors and spend a week in January doing it. It'll probably come out better and just how I want it anyway.
Bummer Sorry to hear M&H would not work with you.. I have tons of wire, we use it to wire race cars, and to put together the various wiring kits we do. Be wary of buying "cheap" wire... there are a number of different grades, and very few folks will use "SX", which is the highest grade of Automotive wire available. I ordered about $2K worth of it a couple of years ago, and have all kinds of neat spiral striped color combos.. and stuff that looks near stock. This wire is vastly superior to what the factory used. If in fact, you have some time on this, send me your harness, and I will be glad to work with you on re-doing it. And even increasing the size of the alternator feed wire, back up to what it should be. We have been known to do some wiring... :Brow: JW
Just a suggestion.. I get my harnesses from a place called FACTORY FIT They are in Bell Mawr, NJ. I believe.. I bought harnesses for 5 cars from them so far, and they were all PERFECT. Be SURE you describe ALL the options under the hood, including stuff like rear defog relay's, hood lamps, electric hood release, etc. J
This is our idea of what race car wiring should look like.. it occured to me that a lot of people may not have seen this car in person, back when we used to race it. Every time someone says "it's just a race car".. in reference to work that is well designed and executed.. I just cringe.. All it takes is some time and effort, sourcing the right parts, and a background in 12V DC wiring.. I can't believe some of the $ 75-100 K race cars out there, with wiring that looks like a third grade science project.. you know, all one color (red) and looks like a rat's nest.. Maybe I am overly anal about it, but I never sat down in this car, and though.. I wish I would have spent more time doing wiring this thing.. JW
I was getting kinda OK with the thought of doing the rewire myself. But I've not been able to locate wire in all the factory colors. Does anybody know a source? I need: red black/white dark green pink dark green/white light blue black/orange yellow tan light green purple brown dark blue white light green/black And probably one or 2 other colors the shop manual doesn't show. Jim, if I come up empty we'll talk. I was planning on doint this in Jan/Feb/March. Yardley
Jeff, If you want to do this yourself... no problem here... not my favorite job.. I have most of those colors, get me wire lengths (plus some) and we can work it out.. we may have to substitue a color or two, but I have ample stock of various gauge sizes... you will have to supply the ends, (napa has most of them) and do the labor.. I can offer you the wire inexpensivly, as I buy it in 1000ft quanities.. Figure about $25 worth of wire.. + shipping.. No reason to by a couple of hundred bucks worth of wire.. to do one job.. Hope that helps you out.. JW
Very cool, Jim. I appreciate that. My factory harness is so brittle! Most of the wires don't even bend any more, they just stand rigid and will break if flexed. Do you know what gauges I need for which wires, or will we be using all the same gauge (14/16/18?)? Yeah, NAPA has the correct spade conectors for the junction block, and I have the ring ends for termination. Thanks again. You're the best!
harness If you say that the harness is exaclty the same but one color diffrent why don't you just pick up that harness and switch that single wire? You can uasally release the metal contact within the plastic housing and maybe ask nicely to see if you can get a non crimped metal contact. although this also depends on if they actually build the harness in house of have it done by a wiring harness manufacturer. also DIGI-KEY sells various contacts and they will send you a huge catalog with all sorts of plugs in it that will prolly for a few of your options.
Jeff, So I can get you the right wire, tell me what each color is going to be used for, so I can send the appropriate gauge wire.. I know the two main feed wires, alt wires, and S terminal wire gauge sizes need.. but indicate what color your going to be using, so we are on the same page here.. JW
