Does anyone know of a manufacturer who makes a reasonably priced ($400ish) 9.0:1 or 9.5:1 pistons for a 340? ray:
PostonBuick.com Stock piston 300-340 Engine 9.1 compression for 2 barrel carb. Product Code: EL2225 $349.00 High RPM Cast Pistons 300-340 Engines 300 engine, 1964-1967, 10.2 compression ratio, 3.750 bore size and 340 engine, 1964-1967, 10.2 compression ratio, 3.750 bore size. I bet using a thicker 0.040" head gasket with those 10.2 CR pistons would drop the compression down to the mid 9's. Might be just what you are looking for.
Thanks guys... I love this site. I also stumbled across Egge via Hemmings site. Their online price for 9:1 is showing $255... Can't beat that if it's current. Has anyone used Egge pistons before?
Was told by my machinist to ask if the Egge pistons have "internal steal struts". I called Egge... and they don't. Oh well, no wonder they were so much cheaper. Scratch them off the list. I tried calling TA & Poston but they're on Holiday... Anyone know if their 9:1 340 pistons have internal struts? Thanks, -Drew
Can anyone tell us what they are, and why not having them is particularly bad? Sorry to hijack this thread, but I will be looking to buy engine rebuild parts next year. Thanks,
Most pistons don't have steel strut inserts, so I would not be too concerned with it. I vaguely recall reading that Buick put steel inserts in the early V6 turbo engines to increase strength and limit heat expansion.
I called TA today and found out all their cast pistons come from EGGE. Because I'm on a budget and new pistons were not originally in the budget, I bought the the 10.25:1 from Egge for $272 less tax and shipping. A very good deal! I was set on buying the 9:1 pistons but I decided to stay with the higher compression (maybe against my better judgement) for the fun factor. Also, I called Poston and they no longer offer the 9:1s for a 300/340... they didn't say why they stopped.
