Just finished getting my sons car back together... 10.8 - 1 .. ta 310...ported heads w stainless valves and all that mess..holley 750 ...recurved hei and too many other dollars to list.....but anyways, have been trying to decide which rearend to go with...I have been thinking of using 3.23 gears but my son kind of wants to go a bit more...anyone out there running something close with suggestions. Thanks Mark :3gears:
I personally tend to think of rear gears in 4 different catagories. #1. From the 2's up to 3.08's are highway gears. #2. 3.08 to 3.73's are street machine gears. This is where you want to be. #3. 3.73 to 4.11's are SERIOUS street gears, for high revving small blocks, or high hp big blocks. #4. Anything higher [numerically lower] than 4.11 belongs on a race car that sees very little street use, and no highway use at all. Hope that helps a little
Other way around, numerically higher, "lower" gears. Its ok, the day I can correct you on something is the day I will remember. I'd suggest 3.55ish if you're gonna pick something higher than 3.23's. I'll probably go with 3.08's or 2.93's, though.
you may want to consider car weight also . heavier the ride , might want to think about a little more gear to get it moving . automatic ( considering overdrive later ? ) , 4-speed ( considering 5-speed later ? ) , tire size , etc . a friend of mine used to run large and small tires for a day to get a feel for the difference . del
thanks guys... Thanks to you all....souinds like my pick for 3.23 should do the trick....don't want him too quick !! :Brow: ................but then again.....rather quick than fast !!! :3gears: Mark :beer :beer
