http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1868167944 Here is a skylark on ebay that is claimed to have 18,000 miles, does anyone else see what is wrong with this picture? The motor is filthy The carpet looks terrible And why would this car need restoration with only 18,000 miles. I usually try not to pick apart anyone elses car but this one just does not smell right. i am not saying that this car is not worth what the opening bid is.
He also said he had the metal put in because of the vinyl roof holding water and rusting out the bottom of the window. Rob
The carpet and floor mats show way too much age and water spots for being a garage kept car. I bought my GS 12yrs ago and the carpet and floor mats were not that rough and my car had 90,ooo showing on the ODO. A few weeks back there was a 72 with 32,ooo on ebay ,there was night and day difference between these 2 cars. That is what I am using as a comparison. Is anyone close enough to go look at this car? I am 20 hrs away, one way. This car is relisted, Auction was ended early a week or two ago. Wonder if some one backed out or what happened.
Some people kill me man,do they actually think that others are going to believe that it has 18,000 miles?durrrou: Thanks
It could be 18000 hard miles. I just checked out an older Plymouth with 23000 and although it was verified as original, it looked like 223000... It all in how it's treated for those 18000 miles.. Todd
The worst thing for a car is sitting! My grandparents gave me a 1975 skylark in 1990 for my graduation that had 13,000 miles on it Garaged kept also the rear bearings went out the leafs fell apart the steel belts in the tires went bad. 3rd set on it in 13,000 miles. Lots of other little things.
I'm just trying to figure out that weird red and white hood scoop: http://ebay0.ipixmedia.com/abc/M28/_EBAY_7e92805545c6c8029c20c76b22952d5c/i-2.JPG
The dash seems to look to be in pretty good shape. I would be more inclined to say that it is a nice 118k car than an abused 18k car. But, it's hard to say. There are some pretty dirty new cars around here, so you never can tell....
Unfortunately, for 60's GM cars, trying to keep them looking new by washing them is enough to rot the window channels out. Over 20 - 30 years, enough car washes would make it necessary to replace the metal in the window channels. My car hasn't seen water in almost 2 years. I just mist it with that Maguires quick shine stuff and wipe it. I dust it with a California duster every few days too.
why not just rustproof the channels? (slapping por15 or similar stuff in them seems like a good idea)
ou: MAYBE this guy is dumb and doesn't realize that odometers only go to 99999, then they go BACK TO 00000. just a thought.
I have. But water gets down in the doors and in the rear windows (past the felts). Then it drains OK out of the doors, but it sits in the lip over the wheelwells and just keeps rotting. Already bubbled my quickie bondo job. I'm hoping to get a few more years out of it before I hang quarters on it.
Subtle signs...... after looking at hundreds and owning (9) 68-69's in 16 years I've learned to look at the little things to verify low mileage .....Things like how the turn signal lever "Clicks" into position. Wear on the brake and gas pedals and drivers armrest. Wear in the paint of the switches and controls of the Dash. Wobbles in the door and window handles. The Drivers position usually takes the most wear in any car so most of these things apply to that position. Sure.....they can be fixed and faked.....or broken/worn early in life but if you take all of them in context usually you can create a good picture. .......18,000 miles could have been 3 trips daily to the town store and nothing else - hard miles for any car. .....just some thoughts Alan W
