Been ages since I changed valve cover gaskets on a car from 1972. What type of gasket should I use on the valve covers. Since the carb is going to be gone for a bit I thought I would clean up the motor since things are a bit easier to access. My valve covers leak a tiny bit so I thought I'd change them.
TA is selling a new rubber gasket: http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?th...bber-valve-cover-gaskets.359633/#post-3090552
I just recalled that I got a complete gasket kit from TA when I did my timing chain cover. It came with cork gaskets. I may as well use them? I assume they just need a little gasket sealant put on both sides of them?
I prefer cork to the rubber when using the factory covers. Just dont over tighten. TA now sells molded reusable gaskets as well as the 1/4" thick cork which seal really well
Looking at video's of how to put on the cork ones. Some guys are putting sealant on both sides of cork, one put spray adhesive on cork to cover and that was it just to hold it in place. What say you all as far as using sealant with the cork?
I'll put a thin layer of ATV on the cover then place the gasket on the cover. Flip upside down with a light weight on top until its dry. Then assemble to the engine with no sealer between the gasket and head. When you remove the cover it should not rip and can be reused.
My Roundy round mechanic buddy says to smear thin film of chapstick on fuel bowl gaskets to re-use them many times without sticking. Wonder if it would work the same on cork v.c. gaskets, on the head to gasket side...
