    on a 73 350 sbb.

is it the one above the dwell window or is it the one to the left of the dwell window.

For some reason I cant turn my distributor counter clockwise far enough to advance the timing more than 3 degrees.

no matter how much I loosen the distributor hold down bolt, it wont let me turn it far enough.

Im wondering if someone had the distributor out and put it back wrong?

    please advise.

The tower clockwise from the one above the adjustment window is #1 as it came stock.

BTW, you must not have a Buick Chassis manual. You really should, they answer a lot of questrions like this.

If you run out of distributor travel, and it prevents you from setting the timing you want, then yes, the distributor is in wrong.

I have a 1973 chasis manual but I didnt see any diagram like that in thre. I looked all through the ignition section. didnt see it. looked in the steve dove performance book, i didnt see it but maybe its there...

i figured it out, the clamp was stuck to the block I had to lift it up in the back and then I could get whatver travel i wanted. Just thought it mightbe in wrong becaus i couldnt turn it anymore.

If you don't want to bother with pulling the distributor and moving it a tooth, just move all of the wires one place counter clock wise so you can get the amount of initial advance you need. :)

Bring # 1 cylinder up to compression then move the pully to 0 #1 is just to the left of the window on the distrubitor cap but you must have it so the points if you have them are just getting ready to open cylinder block drivers side is 1,3,5,7 and passinger side is 2,4,6,8 firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. pull # 1 plug sitck finger on the hole and when you feel compression bring flywheel to 0 hope this helps

Good info, but I think Gary was all set some time around New Year's Eve.
