Which oiling mods are absolutely necessary?

I have a '71 or a '76 block to start with. I need to know what oil passage modifications to make to the block. Are these absolutely necessary to make it live in a race motor?
I am going to run a solid cam. I've heard that you're supposed to restrict the oil to the lifters, since they don't need as much as the hydraulics (since they don't pump up). What is the best way to do this?

Steve - Check this page out from George's Buick Performance site.

That walks you thru alot of the mods. At least you have the larger oil pickup passageways with the '71+ newer blocks.:TU:

Don't forget the TA cam bearings with the grooves on the back.:Smarty: :TU:

There were 2 different block castings in 71

The earlier one, #1231738 may not have larger oil holes as much as the later one. I have a #1231738 and did open up the holes, but never measured the pre-existing holes.:Do No:

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check on the casting number (as soon as it warms up... this weather sucks!).
