im building a 455 for a daily driven 70 skylark. it has a comp cam with 454 duration and lift, TCI turbo 400, 800 cfm holley double pumper, and stock heads. i want good highway/long distance reliability and some kick for around town too. not a race car but still a fast car. reliability is key. should i go with the Edelbrock performer, or the TA SP1. i also cant change my hood. will the SP1's hight hinder its breathing by requiring a drop air cleaner? not sure about this, just need to know before i order one or the other. thanks.

I have an Edelbrock Performer and use stock air cleaner with holley 800 double pumper. Smashes the foam down alot, but it fits. Not really sure it boosted performance or not.

i run the sp1, didnt notice a big change in driveabilty when i went from the stock intake, but you have very little hood clearance.

A performer should be just fine with your application. I am running a B4B on my car, and it seems to breathe a little better in the higher RPMs...

I don't think that the intake selection will dictate whether the car is driveable or not....that's all in the carburetion, compression ratio, cam, etc.

thanks. so the performer will probably be better? can i use a 3 inch filter element with it?

i read once that unless you have 3.55 gears or lower the SP1 will hurt your power a little

I've run both an Edelbrock and SP1. With the Edelbrock, you can use the factory air cleaner setup. But if you go with the SP1, you cannot. You will need a drop air cleaner with a 3" element. And it will still be close. I actually cut another 1/4" to 3/8" to drop the air cleaner further so that I had a solid 1/2" to account for the engine moving. And don't have the threaded shaft for the wing nut stick up any farther than it has to or you'll know exactly where it is when you close your hood!

Driveability is not an issue with the SP1. You will have to retune your carb, though (reset idle mixture and possibly jetting and power valve).
