Ok so far (that was the only thing I know by myself. But can you see if it is a 215/300/340/350? I live in Germany, so it is not so easy getting this informations. Thank you!

Being a chevy small block, it could be any of the following...265, 283, 302, 307, 327, 350, or 400. The 215, 300, 340, 350 family of engines are Buick, and are a different animal than the chevy engines. I'm not sure where the id numbers are on the chevy engines, you might try a chevy website, they can tell you.

On SBC the engine casting number is right behind the head on the drivers side. I'll try to find a good picture.

The are many things by looking at your pic to determine is a SBC.

-buick has the distributor on the front, SBC on the back
-buick has 6 valve cover bolts, SBC has 4
-buick thermostat housing bolts to the front of the intake, SBC bolts to the top
-and buick doesn't use an alternator bracket like that either

    Hope that helps a bit.

Look at the front passenger side of the block. Under the Alternator . The # should be there. Google Chevy engine #'s and it will tell you the what, where and when about it.

SB Chev distributor is in the back.

SBB dist. is in the front.

While I'm not much of an authority on Chevrolet engines, from what I can see in your pictures it has an aluminum dual plane intake, an Edelbrock square bore carburetor, and headers. It is definitely a Chevy small block engine though, and not a Buick. Distinctive characteristics (as previously mentioned) are the rear distributor and mounting brackets for alternator, with thermostat housing location.

Chevy parts are generally cheaper and more abundant than Buick parts, so that's a plus for you.

It's difficult to know exactly what it is in terms of displacement, and as mentioned before, could range anywhere from a 283 CID to a 400 CID, since small block Chevy engines look so similar on the outside.

Odds are it's going to be either a 305 or 350, possibly a 383 'stroker' (350 block with 400 crankshaft), since these are more common and modern, though you won't know unless you can find a casting number on the block.

Finding that (and I wouldn't know where to look) will tell you at least what kind of block it is.

Were you looking for upgrades or just curious about the details of the engine?

Here's a few pictures of a Buick 350 for comparison:

Also, notice how much wider the Buick 350 is compared to the Chevy small block. The intake manifold and distributor location are dead giveaways.

Thank you so much! Im not looking for motorparts/Upgrades, I just wanted to know what Id bought, how much hp it might have etc. What I found out is, that it is a 350cui. The engine runs and sounds round, so I think there wont be some work. Just made the frame- Body new, next the paint will be taken off..
