I have the full quarters from Year One for my 68 Skylark convertible, but have yet to do any skin welding. Where should I cut the original quarters and the replacements, so I can use a flange tool and create the lip. Should I leave about one inch below the upper side ridge?

Also need outer wells if anyone has a good set? Thanks, Eric.

Your decision should be influenced by how much damage you have on the old panels. Are you dealing with collision damage or the usual, rust? If you just have rusty lower quarters, then a lower splice point would be the best method, probably. On the other hand, if the quarters are totally rusted or damaged, then a higher splice line is better. I think that you are correct in planning on coming down from the body line some amount if you need the whole skin. Opinions on flanging vary from person to person. If you can set up a nice butt weld, then you will be ahead of the game, in my opinion. On the other hand, a flange will be easier to do, as you just need to be close on your cuts. The flange CAN be an incubator for rust if prep is not correct, but many have used that technique with fine results. Take a look at the resto sections of BuickPerformance.com. Also, Youtube has lots of videos. Punch in "S71" project. It has a lower, low dollar partial repair on a 71 Cutlass hardtop. Youtube has plenty of V8 TV stuff on there, too, with Chevelles being repaired a variety of ways. Good luck, RudyE.
