I've looked high and low for the engine number on my 1971 350-4 but can't find it. Any ideas?

If you look on the drivers side of the motor, between the front 2 sparkplugs and below the head you will see a flat area (the block). On this pad is where the motor code is.(2 letters,71 should be TB for a 350-4)You will have to be very careful if you scratch off the paint or whatevers on this pad since you may scratch off the letters.I would take a rag and spray choke cleaner on it and then gently rub the area first to get the crud or paint off.You will probably need a flashlight to look at it so you can see it.As for the vin #s ,take off the p/s pump and bracket and look on the block for them.you may have to scratch the paint to see them but they should be there.A drop light will help you see them. This number should match the last vin #s of you vin to be the correct motor for your car.If this seems confusing,do a search for engine codes and something will help you out.I know there are pics to show you where they are too.
