68 skylark, got two wires in the front headlight wireing harness that i can not find homes for, a red thick wire with a plug junction on the end, and a green thinner wire (not horn). both on front driver side of car.
By the way the harness looks, it seems factory made, and the way the car looks, there is no sign of an alarm ever on it. The red wire does look like it could be a power wire, but to what ? have researched all my related wire charts and show no sign of a red wire there. I may have just concluded that the green wire maybe a low beam headlight wire for the passenger side, line just cut and that hlf showing. will check when i get home and off work.
Two horns, but both are hooked up. but tonight i did notice that the second wire (green) that i mention earlier, is connected to the horns. like a chain almost, off of the second horn is the hanging of the green wire. now where does it go ? The other wire a red thicker wire i traced to the top of the back of the main harness, looks like a power wire to me. on the fuse box it says battery auxillary on the front side ? Any thoughts
The only large red wire Ive run into on the drivers side front is for the relay mounted on the inner fender well. The relay has a few wires going to it, but its not on big plug, so maybe it fell off?
Was your car originally an inline 6? The I-6 may have had a couple relays bolted to the inner fender. One time delay & the other a reversing relay. Emissions I believe. Look for two screw holes in the fenderwell at about where the harness ends.
I'm looking at the '71 Chassis Manual. The I-6 is shown with the relays. Possible the 350 in '68 had this also?
I've kinda boiled it down, i think !! Possibly a headlamp control module, or sometype of horn relay ?? Where all my 68 skylark drivers at, can someone pop there hood and tell me where these two leads go ?
If the green wire is jumped from your horn and it ends near the power wire, could it be for an aftermarket horn? It's not hard to get a wire into the main loom and look right. I don't know what wiring goes into one of these air horns, but I'm guessing they need power for the compressor. Just a thought.
I've been messing with this very problem in my 68 skylark 350 project. I'm pretty sure the red wire is the horn power lead. The relay is attached to the core support behind the LH headlights. The relay has 3 spade-pins. 2 are used with a special plastic connector so you can't mix them up, one signal, the other (green wires) to the horns. The third is the red power lead, I believe. Everything is well grounded, the new relay clicks as it should, no horn action. I'll check again that I got power to that red wire, but other than that, I'm stumped. If I got something wrong, someone let me know.
I'm hearing of a horn relay being mounted on the front drivers side behind the headlights of the 68 skylark, is this so ? and is there a red power wire from the wire harness on it ?
The horn relay is where you have stated. Here are the wires as listed in the '68 Chassis Service Manual Red - "Engine compartment" From fuse box to horn relay. "Interior" - from fuse box to "batt" side of ignition switch Green - "Engine compartment" - to horns Blk/Lt Blue - "engine compartment" from fuse box to horn relay. - "Interior" from fuse box to steering column. The only other wires running forward would be: Dk Blue/White = rt park and turn signal lamp Lt blue = Lt park and turn signal lamp Brown = Rt/Lt side marker lamps lt grn = headlamps Tan = headlamps hi-beam Blk = headlamps. Any other wires were either added or were part of some other accessory. :beers2:
See I knew it was that damn relay! Its in a different spot on mine but I can almost guarentee thats what its for.
