Where do you get your shop tools? I go to the usual suspects for most tools Craftmans Home depot - Lowes and generally buy the best I can afford. But where do you go for quality auto/metal working tools? Just curious
I shop Harbor Freight Tools. They might not be the best that I can afford but they are usually cheap enough that I don't worry about having to replace anything.
i get mine right out of my dads 4 tool boxes lol. cant go wrong with mac and snap on! ex diesel mechanic of 30 years and now he cant stand looking at anything that needs fixing.
hand tools i get from sears. body tools when i get there (sanders and such) will go with online no name or harbor freight. since i wont use them that often and they are still pricey anyway for impact gun i will be shopping for a higher quality one since i will most likely get more use out of it.
I get all my "HAND TOOLS" i.e wrenches, screw drivers, sockets and hammers from Sears Craftsman for the life time offer, Air tools I use What I can afford Harbor frieght..ebay...garage sales, because it is something that I will not be using all the time. My Mig Welder is a Miller because it was a gift....So I guess I am saying that I will just about use any place depending on what my needs are. :TU: Don
where to shop When ever possible, PAWN SHOP, Pick out the good brands, then haggle. I buy just good looking stuff. If you are carefull you can come up with a shop full of good tools for a good price. Also suggest auctions. yard sales, ect.
Pawn Shops Be careful using a pawn shop near you! I have two old buddies that will not talk to each other because my one friend Jack bought some power tools from a local shop and it turned out it was my other buddy's Willie's tools! ou: Willie was too proud to say anything and went to the local Pawn shop and put up some of his tools for a loan on a Monday morning until the coming Friday Jack goes in on Wedsnday and buys the tools.....Willie gets embarassed and mad when Jack sees that the tools had a named on them and calls him about it not thinking it was him! and makes some wise remarks also to boot the whole time not thinking it was his friend's Tools and now the two don't talk! But you are right you can get some great deals on tools at a pawn shop they are one of the first thing that People put up for a fast loan along with Music Equipment......HAPPY HUNTING! Don
tools That is what is known as theft. All pawn shops when an item comes in and is pawned, the item is pawned for 30 days. It cannot be sold. It still belongs to the owner that pawned it. Then if the owner doesnt redeem it at the end of thirty days then it comes out of pawn. Most reputable shops will wait a period of time before a given item is placed out for sale. Almost all pawn shops are required to submit a copy of the pawn ticket to the local police for thier inspection when the item is pawned. The only way some shop could put an item out for immediate sale is for the person to walk in and say " I want to sell this" Again the copy of the bill of sale signed by both parties is sent to the police dept. I never worry about buying from a pawn shop.
If you want to buy new,Summit,Jegs,Speedway and Eastwood all have good quality brands, you just have to shop around for the best deals.I have also bought from Grainger but they are higher on some tools. Mike B.
Thank you Doc Doc, That is what I thought also! I know that the Police have to be notified and I thought that all "PAWNED" items have to be held for a minium of 30 to 60 days unless the owner of said items releases it for sale right away. I also thought that they have to put the date of purchase and release on the item if it is being held by the Pawn shop owner o No: . This all occured back in the Early 80's, Did The laws change?? Like I said I thought that the person that was putting up the items for a "LOAN" was to be notified before sale went thru? Don
Some were hand me downs from my Dads toolbox.Others were bought here and there but most of them were bought at Sears.I love Craftsman brand but for specialty tools or something i won't use but a couple of times I'll go to Harbor Freight Tools.Nice thing about Craftsman is ,if I break them(and I do occasionally)they replace them no questions asked. :Brow:
I have bought a lot of Craftsman tools for the convenience of the warranty,if I'm buying new and it has a lifetime warranty from Sears I'll buy there.I go to some estate and most all local machine shop auctions and check all vendors at swapmeets and get some good deals on SK,Snap On,etc. Most of my hand tools at home are high end but all I have in them is a fraction of what they were sold for.And yes they do fit nicer than the imported ones, altough I have some of those too o No: .
DR You asked about quality metal working tools. Did you mean sheet metal tools ? If so I have bought from Woodfab.com and they are fairly reasonable and pretty good tools. Last H/F I bought was JUNK , it was a transmission jack, worked 1/2 time. Put trans on it , lifted up to motor, installed bellhousing bolts and when ready to push on up to put in crossmember ,no go. Called company said No replacement , will send parts needed to repair. Six months later the parts came in , after I had thrown the jack away because I had gone and bought a real one. much more money, but needed the jack right then. Do not use it often , but when I do need it I know I can trust it. Sorry about going on so long just hate junk tools and worse yet see someone looking for tools not to be forewarned. Mike
