when to unbolt flywheel from torque convertor

    I am going to remove the engine finally... I'm thinking of removing the engine and trans together. Should I unbolt the flywheel from the torque convertor while everything is still in the car? How have you guys gone about pulling your engines/ trans from your cars?

    That's how I always do it, remove the torque converter bolts while it's still in the car. It's a lot easier than trying to do it with the whole thing swinging from a cherry picker.

    Me too! And I always pull/re-install the engine and tranny as a unit rather than trying to get the dowel pins and motor mounts to line up after pulling them separately.

    Thanks! Guys I have a acdelco cherry picker. I plan to use. I'm thinking I will use a chain across the front left and rear right intake bolts and pull the engine and trans together

    You will likely need a load leveler to change the angle of the engine and trans as you remove them... It will need to be very steep as it comes out to clear everything...

    Either way you go make sure you get the rad out as well as the battery, the more room the better.

    If there is nothing wrong with the trans then leave it in place... it will save you time and complication not the mention make the job easy compared to handling the engine and trans... I start with the torque converter bolts, then support the trans, do the bellhousing bolts, hookup the hoist, and then remove the engine mount bolts and exhaust. Then I am done under the car and I un-hook the rest from the top. I use a socket then a swivel then a long extension and another swivel if you have to in order to get the top bellhousing bolts out... Other than that it is pretty easy, just be sure the trans is supported when you un-bolt the trans from the engine.

    It is not hard to line up the engine and trans when putting the engine back in, just make sure you have the trans up a few inches higher than normal and you can line up the engine and trans, bolt them up then lower the engine onto the mounts...

    This way you do not have to mess with trans linkage, trans cooling lines, etc. I find it very easy to get the engine out without the trans, and going back in goes smooth as well. :beers2:

    Thanks! Just the info I needed I figured it would be a little tricky getting the top bellhousing bolts out. Would it be a good idea to loosen or unbolt the trans from the crossmember

    No need to touch the cross-member bolt just setup a jack and a chunk of wood to safely and evenly raise and support the trans as required. The rear of the trans will stay put just the front will come up a bit.

    Once the engine is supported by the crane you can remove the engine mount bolts then raise the engine a few inches and support the trans, disconnect the trans, and then after the engine is free to pull raise it up.

    If it hasn't been said already, either drain the transmission first, or, once the driveshaft is removed prior to lifting the assembly, stick a spare yoke on the output shaft...otherwise you'll have a lot of trans fluid on the floor when the engine is raised.

    I shouldn't need to mess with the trans fluid if I'm not pulling out the trans correct?

    Correct. Devon is very knowledgeable as is Sean. Only problem is he reads the same way I do, diagonally at a quick pace AND we miss the occasional detail. :) . I second Sean's comments.I took my engine out twice last winter, left trans in. It was my 1st engine R&R. I did the 2nd R&R on my own and it was a slice. Good Luck. Don't ask why I had to take it out a second time.

    That was what I was gonig to say also. Ive done it both ways and IMO its easyer to leave the trans in place.

    A very true reminder when the trans is pulled... This can save a ton a cleanup!

    Thanks a lot guys! I wanted to make this gosmoothly as possible. I have checked for clearance with the jack in place and I won't have enough room to pull both at once. The boom on the cherry picker would hit the garage door and because of that I would have to remove the radiator core support or right fender and inner fender. Engine only it is...
