When do you part a car out?

How far gone does a car have to be before you part it out vs. putting it back on the road?

Granted, if it's a super rare desirable car it stands a better chance of being rescued than a 4 door grocery getter. I don't want to part a car that has a chance of being driven again, but when do you make that decision?

I usually decide that if the car will cost more than twice what its worth finished. (10K investment ina 5k car) or something like that..

When the neighbors start complaining that it ain't worth anything. Then you part it out and make believers out of them.

    Hey Jerry,

What do the neighbors say about your yard? :Brow:

From what Scott Miller said today, it sounds like you're starting your own Buick wrecking yard.

Of course, once the GS sells, I may be digging around for a place to drop my motor (assuming I get a house with a garage to build it) and may have to stop by.

    :Do No:

    Steve,

Shhhhhhhh. Don't get the neighbors going. I only have 1,2,3...8, 70-72 parts cars. Yes, I'm hording them, unless someone needs parts.

What can I say, the junk yards tick me off for not having any of these when I go to put one together, so...I bought them ALL!!!

Brian - I think the 'rarity' of the model would come into play quite a bit!!

As much as a hate to see Skylarks in the junkyard, I'd send one there long before I even considered sending a BB GS or worse, a GSX that was in need of MUCH repair. Some things ARE worth the extra work - just depends what they're worth in the end.

Thanks for the replies. I emailed about the GS 350 someone posted in the For Sale forum that was rough but complete for $500. (I haven't gotten a reply yet, BTW if you're reading this  ) I thought about getting it, taking the parts I need (or might need in the future) and selling the other parts. If it's complete I would think I could make the $500 back pretty easy.

I don't want to part it out if there's a chance it will be on the road again. Guess I'll just have to see how "rough" it is.

    Thanks again

I hate to say it out loud but I just bought a 68 GS400 hardtop for a parts car for my convertible restoration, thing is this really isn't a parts car, the paint could be buffed to like new, zero rust SoCal car and the interior needs about $100 worth of restitching to be perfect, the only real problem with the car is cam bearings. For a few hundred bucks this could be an awesome driver, but, it has all the options I want for my ragtop, tilt, sportwheel, speed control, power and reclining seats, cruise, boxed control arms, power windows , 16" arm rest, a replacement door for my damage one, awesome grill, rust free core support, and list of other stuff that when purchased seperately is extremely expensive. So hopefully when I'm through I'll have everything I need and sell this car as still a GS just minus the good stuff. If I can't sell it that way though it will go in parts. Hate to do it but...

    Ouch! :eek2:

Although it isn't the time for me, my plan (hope) is that by the time I get into my next house (or garage with attached living quarters), that I'll be able to find a really nice bodied Skylark with a bad motor. Then I can drop the 455 I'll be putting together into it.

Having one that came with a BB originally would be perfect!

    I must rest now.
