Wheel Studs?

I'm going to get new studs for the rear wheels/axles. BOP 10-bolt 15x8 Centerlines and stock 15x7 Rally wheels.

What size to I need to meet NHRA tech?

Do I need to drill out the axle flanges to fit the new studs?

Should I be concerned only with length and not diameter?
(Which would make the previous question moot, if I only need 7/16 diameter)

How do I get the stock studs out? I've beaten on them in the vice. Figure I can haul them to the machine shop and he can press out/in while he's boring out my brake drums to fit my 'new' axle.

    Hints?

    Thanks

And am I going to need two sets of lug nuts?

One short shank/open end for the Buick wheels and another, long shank for the Centerlines. Sheesh.:gt:

    Choice in knurl diameter:

    .480 Late GM drum brakes.

    .560 Early GM drum brakes.

I'm guessing the .560 for the early brakes?
Summit catalog doesn't specify what is early or late.

    Thanks.

Gary, just went through this with my parts guy.The .480" studs are from the early rear axle/drum combo. The front disc brake hub takes the larger .560" studs(these are for a 70 GSX).Be carefull when buying from your neighborhood parts store as they like to substitute a shorter front stud for the correct ones(must be more available).
Sorry I don't know what NHRA requires, just what was stock.Hope that helps.:Do No:

Hmmm.... Summit states the .560 are for disc/early drum. Guess I'll have to get off my duff and measure them.

I'll be getting Moroso stuff from Summit, not taking a chance on local shops.

I think NHRA requires only that the stud extend through the nut a distance equal to the diamter of the stud (7/16" in this case).

    Thanks Al.

    NHRA Wheel Stud requirements

Gary, you are correct, I am looking at the 2002 NHRA Rulebook and in the "General Regulations" all they state is that "all wheel studs must project into the hex portion of the lug nut by a distance equal to one diameter of the stud..."
There is no general regulation for stud diameter unless it may be class specific...

Paul, does the 1 diameter of the stud projecting into the hex portion of the lug nut apply to all classes? That does not seem to say that the stud has to stick out of the lug nut. Seems like the slower cars cars would not have that requirement.

Carl, this is all that was written in the General Regulations...I scanned a couple of specific classes (Super Stock etc...) to see if there was any different information dependent on the class, but I did not see any other reference to stud diameter/length requirements.

Open lug nuts are required right? So they can see the threads.. no acorns.
