I got my hands on a full set of Rallye Wheels that are in pretty good shape except for some of the Black paint is chipping off from the wheel. What is a good paint to use to fix these up?

Here's the info on George's website. Do you want the original finish or is gloss ok? I used Gloss Rustoleum on mine, but word is, you can't paint over it without stripping it off first.

I just bought a couple of more cans of paint, just got the stuff that was marked for outdoor use. Prep is more important, I think.

This is how the rustoleum looks

    Don:

I've been told our cars had an argent silver rather than black wheel. Look at Ted's wheel in this thread , that is if you can see past that perfect center cap.

Eric when you say PREP what do you mean? Scuffing up the area that the paint is going to go and cleaning off the old paint.
Ahhh the heck with it I think I will ship them down to Ted's Place and have him do it

What I did to prep was first I cleaned the paint as well as I could (soap and water). Then I used some prepsol to get the rest of it off. Then using some 300-400grit paper, I scuffed the paint and sanded it until it was even and smooth. More prepsol, then some spray prep stuff, then prepsol on a rag to wipe everything off (never can be too clean!). Then I painted. The part that took the longest was taping everything off. I found it faster to just rough tape everything. Then tuck it into the creveses with your finger. I used a razor blade to cut the lines as straight as I could. My wheels had been painted poorly before so I had to use the razer blade to also cut away paint from where it was prior to taping.

I guess that sounds confusing, but really... tape the wheels off and trip to spec, wipe it down with prepsol or some equiv., sand the paint to a consistant smooth finish, wipe it down again, let it dry, and paint. Light even coats (took about 4 or 5 for mine to come. 15 minutes apart).

I also forgot to post the link to George's website

    Thanks

Eric, Thanks for the help......I guess I should do Before and after Pictures so I can tell the difference? I have a Air brush and was thinking that I would use that to lay the paint down after I TAPE everthing off.
    Thanks again, :TU: ,

However you're comfortable, spray paint can worked for mine

I forgot to take befores, but I had another one is basically the same condition, so I took "before and after" side by sides.

I don't have them on my car because I realized that, although two of them were good enough for drivers (by my standards), the other two just wouldn't be good enough for me, so I am just using the factory (and in decent condition) 14" rallys for now.

    Prep-Bead Blast

    Hey Guys-
I just did 5 rims ( full size spare), that started out just like Erics. I found a local body shop who bead blasted the black sections on all 5 rims for 75$. I used blue painters tape to mask off the chrome, and discovered that the slight edge on each section is a perfect guide for a blade, whatever type you use-I used an Exacto model type knife. I masked each rim in 20 minutes or so, dropped them off, picked them up, wiped them down, and hit them with two coats of Rustoleum Gloss (following Georges advise that they will weather to semi gloss) and for a total investment of $180, I have 5 very good driver quality rims.

    Good Luck!
    Dave
