ive been researching parts etc for my V8 300 and it seems like this engine is the :blast: "ugly duckling" of the bunch..

is there a reason for this?

probably just because its rather small and was built for a very short amount of time. Most people interested in improving their power have simply upgraded to the most popular small block, the 350, or all the way up to a big block. This means there is not much interest in it and therefore no incentive for companies to make aftermarket parts. Basically there aren't enough people to buy parts for it so companies don't bother making them.

It's an oddball engine, it wasn't offered in a GS, it's in between the V6 and the 350, but it's one tough (thickwall block) cookie, to me the weak link is the cast rods, I wouldn't wind it much over 6 grand. Has a perfect rod/stroke ratio=1.75. It weighs 50 more lbs than the 350 Buick so it's more robust, more durable, has an ARMA steel crank (it's cast). The torque rating is where it shines and on the street, where we don't have to be geared to the moon, that is what counts. My 300 engine from a LeSabre was rated 355 ft/lbs of torque. This little 8 started out as an economical V8 option but after 30 years of service, it's better than a Maytag. J&C's Parts in Tonawanda, NY has more parts than you need at a fair price.

    thanks guys.

SS, im all to familiar with company incentives to make aftermarket products w/ my New Beetle.

i posted in then newbie section, but the 65' was my wifes, grandmothers. so its been in the family for its life.. my goals are to keep it stock/OEM as much as possible, so no 350's etc. :Brow: the headers are very rusted.

    RR, nice info. i believe i read once the V8300 was 210hp / 310tq.

ive got an email to TA and ill check in w/ J&C's

455 or Original 300 what should I do

:Do No: Thinking of putting a 70 455 in my 64 Lesabre, BB is ( supposed to be rebuilt ) one thing for sure it got new motor paint on it, but anyway was thinking of having it checked out and dropping it in the 64. I also got the tranny that was attached to it all for $250, the car is really nice and that SB 300 runs strong w/out no problems its just that the BBB sounds so so :3gears: , well you know :Brow: I think I just got too much time on my hands to think about my Buicks

i'll post this on the BBB thread and see what they think

    Ugly Duckling?

Actually I think the Buick 300 looks pretty good, the heads have kind of an art-deco look, exhaust manifolds are where form follows function, internally the ports are cast much better than many other kinds and makes of the Otto-cycle what-nots. Heck, I was going to paint one up, put a piece of glass on top, and use it for a coffee table, but the wife really didn't like the idea. Foxworthy would be proud! "Mildred, don't let the kids turn that fanblade, it'll start and the torque will turn the thing on it's side". Talk about a conversation starter. Seriously, I've seen an Indy engine done this way.
BTW, the 2 barrel engine in '65 had 210hp/310ft/lbs torque, the 4 barrel was 250hp/335ft/lbs, some were rated 355ft/lbs of torque.

I bought a factory service manual after I got my first 66 gs since the motor was in the trunk in hundreds of pieces.they have a lot of pictures and good info.you would want 65 chassis service manual.
