In '95 we went to Switzerland to visit my wife's family. Rented a BMW, hit the Autobahn towards Frankfurt. Maintained between 140 and 160 most of the way. The crazy thing over there is going 150 and seeing someone come up behind you with their left directional on. I was told that means get out of the way, and you'd better. We were passed buy a ME/BE that had to have been going 170+. It's funny, slowing to 70mph does feel like 10 or 20mph, but 140mph + for an extended time feels like 70!
I've been about 150mph in a Benz (S-class, I think) on the autobahn in Germany, but I wasn't driving. It is something to be flying along and have someone pass you like you are standing still!
We hooked a nitrous system to a rented malibu once... didnt go very fast, though. We were more of the "take it off road, then to the high pressure car wash" type of crowd.
I think it was a montero sport 4x4 or an equvlent ( to many rental cars in the last 8 years) me and a buddy were in san fransico for work and had it going 90 - 95 in low range
I wasn't driving either, but was on the Autobahn in a taxi. It was a beautiful yellow Mercedes, very nice ride. I looked at the speedo to see it registering around 250 -260 kph. I did some quick calculations and come up with right around 150 mph, give or take a few. I was amazed at how smooth the ride was and how it made it seem like another trip down the highway here in the US. The only thing that scared me was the people that pass you going that fast (We got passed by a Ferrari and a Porsche, going towards Austria), and they had to have been going 180+!! And, the other thing that scared me was how closely the driver followed other cars, going the same 150 mph as us. I bet he couldn't have been 10 feet behind the car in front of us!!!
The Regal in the far lane is NOT a T-type. Had to get to the Nationals somehow, and we weren't going home without having raced... Of course, we didn't go very fast (V6 2bbl...)
Just south of Daytona there is about a 10 mile section of 95 that has pine trees and a ditch on both sides of the highway. No where for a cop to park. Every summer I go down to my home in Cocoa Beach, a couple streets over from my parents. I fly and rent a Deville. 2 summers ago I took my them up to Charleston, SC for a week. On the way home on the section I kept creeping the speed up and watching the old man in the mirror. LOL!! Mom's reading her book and not noticing. The old man finally looks over and sees the digital speedo reading 125. He just shook his head with a you're such an nootball look on his face and I let off.
