Whats the deal with suicide knobs?

    I've always "heard" they were illegal, or whatever. You can still buy a version of this type of thing at tractor supply places, or at least I bought one at a tractor supply place here in my little town. It is not chrome nor lucite, just a spinner knob, around $20, thought I might use it on the lawn mower but never did. Putting them on a steering wheel makes a big ugly spot on the wheel.
    I think the one on ebay has some collectible value thus the big money.

    It must be state laws. I don't recall them being illegal.

    I've always heard they were illegal, but don't know it to be true.
    As for the price, just like anything else, if you have a 50's car and want a "vintage" knob you pay.
    Not that I would pay that kind of money but then again I wouldn't pay thousands for a carb that needs rebuilt because it's got the right numbers stamped on it either.

    The whole car hobby is built around the fact that it's funded with expendable income so the prices reflect the leisure aspect of that.
