I just had a 12 bolt completely built. I furnished the case and everything else was brand new. 33 spline axles-strange, Eaton posi, The best C-clip eliminators Stange makes, 4:11 R&P by Moser, 1/2 inch studs, sand blasted and powder coated case....including labor......what would you guys pay? I'm curious as to costs as most people thing, we out here in the other coast, pay more for stuff.
Rearend cost Len.... I had a 12 bolt narrowed....it included 31 spline moser axles with big ford bearings, flanges welded on to the axle tube ends, ladder bar brackets welded in place & labor. Then, I bought: 12 bolt Auburn carrier. 3:73 gears with install kit. Pinion depth gauge. Rearend cover. Total invested cost to date: $1635.00 ou: Yikes!...I hadn't total these items before. And this is with me doing the gear install..... Also, I still have to buy rear brakes... Tom :TU:
I got about the same thing as you, except I purchased a rear that a guy had built and blew the trans right afterwards and had to part the car. So I paid a grand for 70 12 bolt, 33 spline, eaton posi, 3.73s, 1/2 studs, complete drum to drum with brakes, cables included....The guy showed me reciepts for the same grand I paid him in parts. And he paid 400$ in labor above that.
Hey thanks guys, me thinks some of you guys in the mid west and east are saving quite a bit over our costs out here. I watch a bunch of the sales places, recycler, etc and a stock, but rebuilt 12 bolt for an A body may go for 1800 bucks....yikes. Seen quite a few for the 12 to 1500 range. I used Ron at ABE Trans, (he's in Santa Clarita and has a 70 Chevelle with 69K invested, good gawd,) he did an incrediable job, I told him no rush and he took that to heart...... but the job was well worth it. He charged me about 350 labor, virtually everything else was parts related. The rear end, including a TA cover, gear oil backing plates, no brakes, ran 1700, and that's with the best out there. Thanks again for your kind responses.
12 bolt well to make you feel better I added up the cost and it came to about 1730 in the retail world. that includes his labor. I am sure he gets a deal throgh his strange supplier so cut 25% off that for him too. We make money on the parts also. don't kid yourself that 350.00 is all he is making. I sell whole rears for 1595 with complete brake kits bolt in ready. 33 spline set up is an extra 150.00 c-clip system is another 200.00 BUT that includes a housing what would that cost? 200.00 -500.00 depending on the housing. We make money to spend it ....As long as he did a good job setting it up and gave you the parts you paid for you should be very happy. A lot of scammer out there that take people all the time and they get JUNK. Take care and Happy Holidays to everyone, Jim - J D Race.com
Ya I know, I said labor....I didn't mention his markup. He did tell me he paid 142 for the Strange C_clip stuff, (Inner seal and all, guaranteed not to leak), and put an additional 15 bucks on that. Ya, I understand that.

I paid a YARD(parts and labor)---for an Eaton posi and new gears in my open end 8.5/10 bolt less then a year ago here in the San Fernado Valley corner of Sepulveda/Plummer place called (4 wheel specialties) did the job in 4 hours and has worked flawlessly  ---Pete/Thousand Oaks
Steve, I live in Santa Clarita, just over the Newhall pass, I know the four wheel drive place very well. Cool....ya gotta come up and we need to compare cars one day. On the cost, 1600 just a little less then me and I have the Strange C-clip kit. Best kit I've ever seen, uses an inner seal. Am running one on the post 65 lark with the 455 and 12 bolt...no leaks so far
Going to spend in the $1600 range upgrading a 12 bolt '69-72 Chevelle rear, it might as well have bolt-in tapered bearing axles. Got Posi? :3gears: Roger
