What's my gear ratio

I tried to look on the axle but couldn't find the numbers. I don't want to pull the cover off and count the teeth. Is there any other way I can figure it out?

I'm thinking it's got to be a 3:08 or something, because my tires will light up like crazy when i give it just half throttle from a stop. I've got the 350 2bbl and I can't get too hard into the gas from a stop because all it does is spin the one rear tire like crazy. My brother has a 72 lemans with a 350 4bbl and i can stomp it as hard as I can from a stop and the most it does is chirp the tires, he's got the skinnier and smaller diameter tires, what gives? It breaks loose 235 70 15s (only spare tires I had for a 15" rim) almost as easy as the 235 60 14's
I I don;'t know if it helps but it came with ac from the factory

I mean, look, a slight throttle increase and they just break loose

If your car only spins one rear wheel then it is not a posi unit.

No one can answer this except to say was the factory standard 350 2 barrel skylark rear ratio was in 72.

    For auto trans cars ---2.56

For 3 or 4 speed manual trans cars -- 3.08

Others could be specially ordered and of course it could have been changed over the years. Having said that it is pretty easy to spin the tire on a peg leg.

Well sounds like your engine has a more mild stock cam??? Yes? Factory like? The factory cams produce alotn of low end torque quickly making the car actually fun to drive on the street. It will not cover the 1/4 as quick but who cares if your looking for fun and burn outs the factory cam or a bit above will get it done WELL.
2bbl carb will also add low end torque and again suffer with top end performance .
Your friend may also have many other issues with his motor like ingition timing vavles wrong cam choice with too low fo stall, carb trouble(not working correctly) etc. MANY MANY things can cause a car to be a DOG.

ANY V8 car should have NO troble spinning the tires WITH ANY GEAR RATIO...PERIOD! if you can not break the tires loose with any muscle car era v8 you have other problems you need to solve. GEARS are not your answer. OK? Jim

Steeper gears will make the car transition through the gears much quicker making the car accelerate faster BUT your top speed will suffer.

The freeway gears will actually produce MORE tire spin and MORE smoke then the steeper gears (IF your motor is running correctly) steeper gears are made to actual cut down on the slipping and direct the torque multipling to the ground and get the car moving...not sitting and spinning.
Freeway gears if you getting them spinning will actually melt the tires at 160mph and you will never hook up . IF you feel confident look down at the top speed of a 2.73 burn out compared to a 3.73 burn out...I guarentee the tires are spinning faster with the 2.73 gears in top speed. (JUST THINK IT THROUGH) It will click. Jim :):3gears: :3gears: :3gears: :3gears:

you don't know how to count driveshaft and tire revolutions? evidently not.

can't believe rcull or i haven't written up a FAQ for that yet. anywho:
1 - park the car on level ground, preferably asphalt or concrete as you're going to be jacking it up
2 - block the RF tire on both sides so it can't roll
3 - put the car in neutral
4 - jack only the LR tire off the ground ( if you had posi you'd have to jack the whole rear up )
5 - put a jackstand under the car frame
6 - use a grease pencil / crayon / marker to mark a spot on both the LR tire and the drive shaft. mark the back / inside sidewall of the LR. this way you will be able to see the mark from underneath the car and you won't have to worry about cleaning it off.
7 - grab the driveshaft and turn it ( yes, your hands are going to get dirty )
8 - count the number of driveshaft revolutions it takes to rotate the LR tire exactly one full turn. now divide that number by 2 ( the division is only necessary for an open rear, you'd already have your number with a direct count if you had posi )
9 - this is a rough approximation of your rear gear ratio. you can make this more exact by putting the LR through more full rotations, you just have to divide the extra rotations back out. for instance, if you rotate the LR rear 5 times you divide the driveshaft rotations by 10.

The freeway gears will actually produce MORE tire spin and MORE smoke

this is true if you're trying to generate WOT smoke. if you're willing to use part throttle the torque division of the taller gear will make it easier to hook the tire up and keep it hooked up.

    Make that "multiply by two".
