Whats involved to switch a 400 rocker system to a 455 style oil through the pushrod besides changing lifters and pushrods, does the head have to come off or it can be done otherwise? Thank you
You will need to pull the driver's side head and plug the oil passage either in the block or the head. Some ways it is done is tap it and screw in a plug or wedge a ball of lead in the hole. With that passage still open you will not get any oil up the pushrod and to the lifters.
George, There are passages in both heads that can bleed off pressure. Check the hole size in the heads (slipping a drill bit inside can give you an idea) and try to find some cup plugs at the parts store. You may even find a metric plug that will fit snug. Tap them in below the rocker shaft seat and you should be fine. You only need to plug the passages at the front of the motor and not the rear. I wouldn't want to pull the heads if I didn't have to. Just my take on it, Mark
I have gotten plugs as small as 1/4 inch. Not sure what size that passage is. Another way (much messier) is to drill the hole and tap it for an allen set screw (they come pretty small). The problem is the metal chips from the drill and tap. If you taped everything off carefully, you could catch most of it. Then pull the distributer and run pressure up through the hole to clean out any remaining ones. Put some sealer on the set screw and seat it below the surface. Idea#2: Aluminum welding rod? Wedge it in and cover with some J-B weld? I hate pulling heads if I don't have to. Mark
Ive never done it before, but cant you use JB weld or some other kind of epoxy? That stuff is pretty strong. ________ PRILOSEC SETTLEMENT UPDATE
