another beautiful saturday expected, time to break out the "essential" tools i will need to go parts hunting. problem is i either take too many and the box weighs a ton [no fun if you are treking around a big yard] or i dont bring the right ones and end up trying to 'borrow' from a fellow yarder [i'ld rather ask the yard dog:shock: ] i am usually good with a socket set, screw drivers, a couple average wrenches, vice grips, channel locks, and maybe a BFH. for newer stuff a couple torx drivers, allen wrenches, a can of WD, my pocket knife [always]. lately i have found a magnet handy, maybe a small mirror, more screw drivers [different sizes] cordless drill and bits, and on and on and on. as you can see i will probably have to get a wagon next for both the trip into and out of the 'back forty' so, what is the best system for chosing just the necessery tools to take for treasure hunting?

Take a portable torch and all your problems will be solved :)

Greg Schmelzer What are you looking at?!

    Welp...

Last time I had to go to U-Pick-It, filled the back of the truck with a 15 gallons air compressor, 5KW generator for the compressor, and a buch of air tools. Drove up to the car(s) we were getting parts off of and went to work!!:TU: :TU: Got a tranny out of a Buick LeSabre for the 89 Olds and a tranny out of an 88 Plymouth Voyager in less than 3 hours. Portable air is so nice!:Brow:

Pi$$ed off a few other guys there that day. The owner didn't let them bring in their truck.:moonu:

most of the yards around here are pretty casual about driving back, too. problem is my old chevy looks like parts itself  gotta stand guard. i have the compressor, just gotta get a generator. but i find the best parts cars are the ones buryied a few cars back and out of the way [ie; not picked over] and the best way to get to them is via foot and good old sweat labor. the torch idea wouldn't work too 'hot' for trim and interior stuff. i like my sawsall for quick cut and runs. a good jack or two is also handy while i am driving back there.
SEE, now i have gone past a little wagon and gone right into heavy equipment!:Dou: maybe if i go straight to the yard after work friday and spend the night i can get out of there alive by sunday:beer
oh yeah, gotta remember to take the camera, now, too :TU:

    Me too...

Ah, crap. We just got a digital too and forgot to take it in case there was anything interesting. Once in a while we find something of interest, but not very often.:Do No: Things are rare around these parts.

If we do find something, it is usually hacked up by someone who only grabs what they want and don't seem to care about anything else or anybody else, i.e., ripped up interiors, hacked body panels, bent up trim pieces, etc, etc, etc.

    Okay, I'm done now.
