We recently acquired a n.o.s short block still in cosmoline. We think its a '73. Anybody know how to ID a factory replacement block? It came with an envelope with stickers that say to use a '73 intake gasket. Any idea what its worth?
The factory replacment blocks usually have a set of numbers stamped on the driver's side front of the block. If you have those, we should be able to decode them. Jeff
Geee, I could be wrong but... I thought ALL factory replacement blocks had a different casting number.:Smarty: I also read from guys with factory replacements that they did NOT have any stampings as to vin & HP of the block.o No: As to what is nice about a nos block, it has a factory bore. Other than that, I'd have it re-honed with a torque plate, cleaned and/or modified & rebuilt the SAME as a used engine....o No:
On the driver's side front B3E12 4 Part number 1241735 Casting date E6. It's a '73. Thanks for the help.
Sorry Clark.... I was thinking about replacement heads.ou: :error: That casting number is correct for late 72 & early 73. No idea what the stamping could mean, but probably so internal GM thing.:TU:
Clark, here is the break down on the stamped number: B = Buick 3 = 1973 E = Engine 124 is the serial number, although I know in '70 and '71 it was 5 digits (ie. 00124). Not positive about '73 though. Jeff
Re: Geee, I could be wrong but... Your correct Dan. There are no numbers as far as a vin or the 2 letter code on the deck. Just the numbers on the front of the block. Jeff
Thanks for the info. There appears to be two digits between the 2 and 4, so the 5 digit number sounds right. We picked up a '69, '73 and '75 225 along with the block, so for now we'll probably store it and save it. It's nice to know we have brand new block, crank and rods. Unfortunately, it has low compression pistons. How many do you suppose are left out there?
