So, I'm brand new forum but I have been reading posts for a long time. I have a 68 GS400 with a 1970 455, 4 speed. It's time to remove the motor for a rebuild and I don't know what to do. Should I leave it stockish and just do the oiling modifications or go big and look at the 470 from tri-shield. Car has been rebuilt with all aftermarket suspension and disk brakes (pro-touring style). Want to set it up as a fun street machine that I can take to the strip and play for car shows etc. If I go with the 470 it would be with stock heads and intake...for now anyways.$$$$!!! Any suggestions? Greg
Stock intake and heads. Would you port either? Do your oil mods for sure. You could do a mild 470 to start, nothing to crazy. That way if you go with the 470 rotating assembly you have a good platform to improve upon later. Aluminum heads, intake, more aggressive roller cam, etc. Just my thought process. A mild cammed 470 should be plenty of fun while getting the funds together for more performance parts. Good luck with it.
What are you going to use it for? A JW engbine would be a fantastic upgrade if you want the extra grunt. He I am sure can build you a pro touring engine to fit your other mods.
First welcome to the forum. What part of Iowa are you from? I think it's best to do the 470 with the heads being ported some.
Putting your engine in the hands of a seasoned Buick engine builder will give you years of satisfaction (even if it hurts you a bit financially in the short term). They know what weak points to look for, and the "finer points" of making these motors really hum. -Bob C.
I don't want to get radical. I reliable 500ish HP motor with bolt ons, (eventually). Edelbrock heads, intake and possible a throttle body set-up.
