Got the 350 barrel out of my Skylark.
Need to rebuild it, what should I do to it?

Its a 2barrel motor, all stock. I want to get
300 hp or so out of it, and I want it reliable
enough to be a daily driver......so what do
    I need to have done?
    Bore .030
    mild cam
    head work
    4 barrel carb
    ??

Yea, Im a damn newbie. :Do No:

300 hp should be easy. Just a good rebuild and proper ballancing with a 4bb rochester and stock intake should make that power. Goodluck.

well ta performance claims 350hp with their intake headers cam and 9.5 to 1 compression so its not hard as long as you get that compression on it.

hei ignition was the best thing iv done for my 350 so far. just a stock gm unit was a huge difference over my worn out points.

What year skylark is it? I would:
Find a set of '70 350 heads for it, put in a set of 10.2:1 pistons, a 4bbl intake, mild cam (the poston GS114 works well for me), a set of headers and maybe an intake if you have the money. That should put you at an easy 350 hp (at the block) or maybe closer to 375-400 if you port the heads. Not only that, it will sound pretty nasty and give those brand Xers something to gawk at. Show 'em we don't have to have big blocks in our buicks to hang. :TU:

I do want to keep the small block in it.

As far as the compression goes, a the machinists I have talked to said that the compression at 10 or higher wont run well on pump gas. I dont know, never heard that before, just figured I would need to stick premium in it.

    Thanks for the tips.
What about carbs, I am planning on putting an aftermarket intake on it, whats a good one for street and what would be a decent carb?

10.2 will run fine on premium. I'd run a Qjet if you can, I really like the street manners of them moreso than a holley or something like that. If you're running a cam though, you'll want to have a pro setup the Qjet for you. There are a couple contacts on the board that do this.

I would suggest a Qjet,or if you go aftermarket go with a carb around 750 cfm. Buicks like carbs.

Add a free flowing dual exhaust system with an H or X pipe, to the rest of the suggested!:bglasses:
Remember, you got to be able to bread before you can run:beer
    And how about headers
What ever camshaft you decide to use, degree it when you install it!:Smarty:
At first i installed mine "by the sprocket marks", just to end up doing it all over again = IT WAS RETARDED with the marks ok/on line!! = cheap timing sprockets and chain kit... :spank:
.... A "not so cheap" true roller kit was very accurate, (wort every $) and with the camshaft opening and closing when it was supposed to it made a lot of difference !:TU:
And don't forget to recurve the distributor.... :Smarty:
    Engine...what year?
What distributor, HEI or points ?

Looks like Im going to need to replace a head.
There is a broken bolt hole for the exhaust.
According to the info I have, it looks like all the
69 69 and 70 heads are the same no matter
what they came out of. Is this information accurate?
It came from a 1970 Chilton.
Also, it physically looks to me like the heads are interchangeable
from either side. Am I right or wrong........would make the hunt easier..................

68, 69, 70 and 71 the head, as far as i know...yes (rockers and pushrod changes over the time, must use the same kind as in yours)
    same thing here..as far as i know...yes
    But why ?
Isn't it possible to fix the broken bolt hole for the exhaust. usually no need to replace the head for a broken bolt or a riped tread :Smarty:
(I broke four (4) exhaust bolts in one head and two (2) in the other when changing a blown head gaskets...
