I will be traveling to Portland Maine on the 27th of this month to the 1st of June.

The reason for the trip is to pick up a 1974 SD455 4 speed Trans AM I just bought (sorry not a Buick). I am bringing my 10 year old boy with me and would like to see some attractions. I dont have a clue?

We wanted to take the SD on a little trip to see some country side and do some things a young boy would enjoy.

Any car events during this time?

    thanks,

    Dennis

Honestly, there isn't a lot of car action in Maine (that I'm aware of). There is some really fantastic driving this time of year, but I can't think of much to do with the kid. Oxford Plains is a racetrack that might have some action going on.

If you make it down to Boston there are a bunch of things I can think of - Boston duck tours, museums, and so on.

Are you driving the car back to Alaska? Between portland and alaska there are probably a million things to do (Mt. Rushmore, Statue of Liberty, etc.). Or are you having the car shipped back?

I spent a bit of time further up in Rockland, sailing was great and the transport museum there is interesting (planes & cars). I know there's some day sailing schooners out of Portland. Or just eat heaps of lobstah!

Lots of good cold rivers and streams in New england. Trout fishing is a great way to pass some time in the outdoors.

Rapid River in Mane is supposed to hold some outstanding Native Brook Trout.

Do you have whale watching tours up your way? The coast of Maine and into the Fay of Fundy has some of the best whale watching tours in the world. One of their websites says some tour operators offer a money-back guarantee if you don't see a whale!

Check out www.ohtm.org for the Owls Head Transportation Museum schedule. I think they have events most weekends. Someone on this thread already mentioned it. It is a fun place for kids and grown-up kids.

I was lucky enough to be there for the "Salute to Wagons" show and the "Salute to Pick-ups" at the Owls Head Museum. Fondest memories of Maine.

Find your nearest AAA and get a tourist guide. there is a ton of stuff for a 10 year old boy and yourself to enjoy. Find route 16 and just drive up the mountains. You will find a ton of good food such as the Yankee Smokehouse or the Scarecrow much further up the road in Bartlett. You will also find attractions on or just off this route such as Polar Caves, Gunstock, Santas Village, Storyland, Scenic Railroad in North Conway, and I highly recommend the Alpine Slide. North Conway also has a ton of outlet stores that the Old Lady will enjoy. If you want to stay in Southern N.H. you can find Lee Motor Speedway, New England dragway, Star Speedway, etc....If you want to run across NH to Central Mass you can also find Six Flags theme park in Springfield Mass. Good luck with the TA.

    Thanks for all the advice,

    We had an awesome time.

Drove from Boston to Portland Maine, Picked up the SD and shipped it north to AK. It turned out to be a very nice car, all the numbers panned out to be the real deal, 18k miles and showed like it should.

After shipping the car we went up to the White mountians to Clarks trading post to see the trained bears, stayed a day in Lake Winnepesaki. Spent some time in Postsmith NH at Market Sq, seen the submarine on display, ate alot of lobster.. Great time and I will be back.

    Beautiful country and Nice people.
