i am contemplating changing the tires on my skylark. what is the best tire to use . the application is mostly street driven, but i wat these things to hook up well. i have seen the drag radials, but i have heard some negatives on them. i was wondering what you guys run. this is a 455 stage 1 powered car that has a lunati 235/245 cam, and all of the usual stuff to run in the 12's.

i was looking for the largest rear tires i could stuff in there (i have 15x7 inch wheels on back). it seems like 275/50R 15 is the way to go. also how will the height of the 50 series tires wook out? will the height of the tire effect the driving quality of the car (ie cause it to feel like a numerically higher gear ratio is in the rear end?).

any help would be greatly appreciated.

The shorter the sidewall the stiffer the ride, and the easier to lite up:grin: I had a set of 305/50/15's (BFG euro radial's)and my V6 would fry them, they stood no chance on my 455. I am running a 255/70/15 on the back right now. It all depends on what gear your running and what rpm's you want to be at for the road. I pretty much stick with BFG's (radial T/A's) for the street. And I like them, they will still light up though. I will probably go with a 275/60/15 when I burn through these:Brow:

    John,
The 275/50-15 is 26.1" tall. What year skylark are we talking about and what tires were on the car stock. Inreasing or decreasing tire height will influence speedometer readings and overall rear gearing. Generally, if you stay within 1/2" the results will be small. Lots of guys use tire swapping to change their effective gearing (it's easier than swapping ring and pinion). I use BFG Radial T/A's on the street. The Drag radials will wear alot faster and have less tread depth plus they pickup rocks and other debris easier. Hope that helps.

it is a 1972 skylark. the tranny has been replaced, and the stupid tranny keeps breaking the speedo cable (the "tang" that sticks into the speedo gear in the tranny sheers off after 10 miles of use). i have 3.42 gears, 245/60r-15 tires now. it seems that 55 mph is 2500 rpm (does this sound right?).

how would 275/50r15 tires effect the "final gearing" (would it make the car feel like it had 3.55-3.73's or like 3.00 final drive ratio).

    John,
The ratio is your rear gears, 3.42 plug that in with your tire height and 60 MPH and you'll get what the tach should read at 60MPH
