:Comp: I placed a thread similar to this one on Repro Parts...I wanted to know the history of a certain set of rally Wheels that look like the type you find on Chevy Corvette Rally wheels, but the derby caps have the Trishield emblem on it.What were "THEY" called, when were they(wheels and caps)made? I figure that they probably are expensive for an original set of wheels and caps,so what would a set of the trishield caps for those Rally wheels cost today? I asked in the repro section, how much would it cost to reproduce that cap with the trishield emblem on it? By the by...Brett Slater's car looks more than VERY NICE/ The car looks SINISTER:TU: That, should have been the CAR that BLADE(Westley Snipes)should've been driving. Thanks,Jay B.Britt,Jr.
First appeared on the 67 Buicks according to my parts book "disc brakes only" but were standard issue on the GS340. 14" diameter; They are 1" wider than the standard (5") steel wheel (from my observations)...DG code stamp ...usually body color or a contrasting color...See how much I have learned from v8Buick? :TU:
They came into use because Buick wanted to add disc brakes to the 67 GS line, and they had no wheels that would clear the brakes. So they "borrowed" the Chevy Rallye wheels, put a different center in them, and kept motoring until they developed their own wheels for disc brakes. Duane
Thanks,Duane for the info...yeah I was thinking about a set,but ithe wheels are 14",and i wouldn't want to go smaller than I have already. My next move as far as wheels are concerned,I want a set of 15x10 Buick Ralley wheels for the rear of my GS. Thanks for the "history lesson":Smarty: Jay B.Britt,Jr.
If you like the look of these wheels, you can always buy a set of 15" Chevy Rally's, use the "flat" 67 style centers and bolt the repro buick center caps into them. I bet with a small touch of fabrication you can get what you want, and they are probably readily available in the 15x10 size, along with the trim rings. Duane
Duane, sounds like you've answered this question before...:Smarty: that's why I LOVE this website.Looks like you've helped me with my next set of wheels.Jay B.Britt,Jr.
They look like the same deal, Chevy rallye wheels with the "flat" 67 style centers and a different buick center cap put on them. Duane
The Red center cap came on disc brake Skylarks and the tri-shield center cap came on the 'GS" cars. These came on 67 and 68's and i think 69's until 1970 when Buick had their own wheels which could be used on cars equiped with dick brakes. David R
'68 was the last year for these wheels, in 1969 the dual piston disc brake caliper went away and I am not sure if the chrome Buick wheel was modified to fit over the calipers. These wheels were the only "rallye" type wheel available when disc brakes were ordered in '67 & 68.. but you could order them without disc brakes also.. I put a set on my GS just to see how they would look...
Hi Mike, I have had so many 68,69's i could not remember if the 69 came with them or not, thanks! Oh yeah....my wife wants your car!
Duane When you mean they replaced the centers you mean on the stainless cap right?...My stainless cap is swirled not polished like the chevys. The disc brake wheels I am running on my Stage1 are off a 67 GS340 car and the oval air vents are slightly larger than the ones on the 67 camaro my friend has.I think the wheels are GS specific right.Seems like you always have the correct info,so I will be interested in your opinion. john
